The emblem of the Order is said to have been made in 962 for the coronation of Otto the Great or for his son Otto II as co-emperor in 967.
Charlemagne was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor, reputedly with the Iron Crown, by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Night, 800 AD.
He lived from 742 to 814 and, as King of the Franks, established and ruled over a kingdom that spanned virtually all the Christian States of Western Europe, including what is now France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, half of Italy and Germany, part of Austria and a small part of Spain.

The Order of the Precious Crown (宝冠章) is a Japanese order, established on January 4, 1888 by Emperor Meiji of Japan.
The order is reserved for females (men may be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun instead); the first class is normally conferred to female royalty.
The badge of the order is a gold oval medallion, with floral designs at its four ends; at the centre is an ancient Japanese crown on a blue background, surrounded by a red ring.

Orders of chivalry, like the Church in general, were recipients of many donations, often in the form of land (e.g., a lord would become a knight and give his possessions to his order).
At this point, then, orders of chivalry are an association of individuals, typically members of the knightly class, committing themselves through solemn vows to obey the rules and statutes of a religious order and to engage as professional soldiers in a permanent religious war, but also in religious and charitable activities.
The Order of Saint-Louis was a transparent allusion to Louis XIV disguised as a religious dedication, but Maria-Theresa was the first to be explicit; she was followed by Charles III, and in the 19th century by many sovereigns (queens in particular).

The decoration consists of a circle with the image of Saint Helen bordered around with the inscription: "Order of Saint Helen Empress." The circle is surrounded by four semicircles in the form of a cross.
