URSULINES, a religious order founded at Brescia by Angela Merici (1470-1540) in November 1535, primarily for the education of girls and the care of the sick and needy.
It was approved in 1544 by Paul III., and in 1572 Gregory XIII., at the instance of Charles Borromeo, declared it a religious order under the rule of St Augustine.
There were Ursulines in Canada in 1639, who taught the catechism to Indian children, and subsequently helped to preserve a religious spirit among the French population and to humanize the Indians and half-breeds.

Ursuline's transition from an all-girls academy to a co-educational high school was symbolically completed with the graduation of the first boy, Jack Vahey, "earnest student and splendid athlete," in 1932.
Ursuline was able to absorb its growth rather well, due in part to the relatively large numbers of priests and religious who were staffing the school at that time.
Ursuline reached its all-time enrollment peak in the 1967-68 school year when 1945 students crowded into a school that was designed to accommodate 1200 pupils.

Angela Merici The saint was born in 1474 in the diocese of Verona.
Foundress of the Ursulines, born 21 March, 1474, at Desenzano, a small town on the southwestern shore of Lake Garda in Lombardy; died 27 January, 1540, at Brescia.
Finally, on the 25th of November, 1535, Angela chose twelve virgins and laid the foundation of the order of the Ursulines in a small house near the Church of St. Afra in Brescia.

It was a logical step for the order when an Ursuline from Tours, Mother Marie of the Incarnation, established an Ursuline community in Quebec in 1639 to catechize French settlers and proselytize native inhabitants.
