Topic: orders of knighthood

MSN Encarta - Knighthood, Orders of
Knighthood, Orders of, in modern usage, honorary societies, membership of which is generally conferred by a nation or a head of state on nobility or people who have performed some unusually meritorious service.
Three categories of orders may be distinguished: royal orders, generally limited to noblemen and noblewomen of royal blood or of the highest grade; noble or family orders, open to nobility in general; and orders of merit, bestowed on people of all classes as a reward for distinguished service.
The orders are believed to have originated during the age of feudalism, when many of the nobility, impoverished by their heavy expenditures during the Crusades or virtually disinherited through the operation of the law of primogeniture, became professional soldiers in the service of various kings or other nobles.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Military Orders
A regular order of knighthood means a brotherhood or confraternity which combines with the insignia of knighthood the privileges of monks.
Orders of knighthood lacking this official recognition should be expunged from history, even though they figure in the pages of all the old historians of the military orders.

There are three knightly orders of principal importance; the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ, the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem; and the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital at Jerusalem.
Noteworthy also are the Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece, sanctioned by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1429; the Italian Order of Annunziata established in 1362 by Amadeus VI, Count of Savoy; and the Order of the Elephant established in Denmark in 1462.
When speaking of knighthood, we are speaking of a very rich, very interesting and extensive history and heritage which serves to represent an ideal, that in its finest form, is worthy of the attention of all men, and women.

Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus - Regalis
In the mid-thirteenth century, the Order of Saint Lazarus was formally recognised as a military and hospitaller order by a Papal Bull which confirmed to it the religious rule of Saint Augustine.
The Order he founded, which at first was little more than a noble confraternity, does not seem to have had a particularly active existence after his election as Pope, nor to have survived his death, as a cardinal of the Church, in January 1451.
A closer analogy may be made to the Order of Saint Stephen of Tuscany, a dynastic institution likewise enlisted in the naval wars of the Mediterranean, and viewed by the Papacy in the same light as the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.

 HISTORY OF KNIGHTHOOD
The institution of knighthood stems from the holy orders that the Catholic Church established in the Middle Ages.
During the crusades, the rules governing monastic orders were extended to the soldiers who, once in the Holy Land, established various religious-military orders to ensure the safety of pilgrims and the sick and to further the battle for Christianity.
Orders of merit are no longer the exclusive right of the nobility or elite, and new classes of rank have been introduced: knight grand cross, commander and knight.

The Monarchy Today > The Queen's Role > Sovereign as Fountain of Honour   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
Historically, the exchange of Orders between the Sovereign and overseas heads of state tended to be personal and dynastic - particularly during Queen Victoria's reign, when many dynastic marriages contracted by her large family created a network which closely united the dynasties of Europe in the nineteenth century.
The award, return or removal of Orders can still be highly symbolic - as shown by The Queen's conferring the Order of Merit on President Mandela, or her return of the Romanian Order received from President Ceausescu and her instruction to erase the President's name from the Register of the Order of the Bath.
Today, Orders bestowed on The Queen, and reciprocal awards to foreign heads of state, can be seen as formal and official awards by which one nation honours another in the person of the head of state.

Notes on the Orders of Knighthood
Members of Solamnia's ruling families disliked the idea of having to enter Knighthood on an equal footing with their social inferiors, and so brought about the formation of a third Order, in which only those of noble blood were eligible for membership.
This had the effect of closing the Knighthood to the common folk, and was the start of the hereditary Knight families (and the beginning of the tradition of handing down arms and armour from father to son).
The Order of the Sword has lost its ties with the ideals of old, and the Knights of the Lance are just a forgotten passage buried deep in the volumes of the Measure.

In the case of the Order of Saint-John (later Malta), they were soeurs hospitalières, and they were the counterparts of the frères prêtres or priest brothers, a quite distinct class from the knights.

During the course of the crusades several religious orders of knighthood were founded which became very important in the years of fighting and difficulty that followed the First Crusade.
The Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, as their full title was, remained powerful even after the crusades had ended, protecting Europe from Turkish naval attacks, and they were finally disbanded in Europe by the French ruler Napoleon I at the beginning of the 19th century.
Later the King of Jerusalem gave them, for the headquarters of their order, the 'Temple of Solomon', and because of this they came to be known as the Templars.

 Orders of Knighthood
The most famous orders of knighthood are the Knights Renunciates, the Knights of the Anvil, and the Knights Cathedrars.
Originally they were but a part of the monastic Order of Saint Andrew; now they are a famous and wealthy religious order whose special charge is to protect the Church.
Election to the Knights of the Anvil can only be won by doing some great and singular deed, and in any case only if there is a vacancy—the numbers of the Order remain constant, and new members are elected only on the death or retirement from the field of a current Knight.

This is the most common way of gaining a Knighthood in the Minnesota Tribe, although civilians are occasionally inducted by the Knight Commander of each Order through major accomplishments in the fields of the arts, history, science, and the like.
