If others feel that "powers of ten" is too precise, perhaps something more winded like "an order of magnitude is a range of numbers that differ from a power of 10 by a factor of order 1 (a single digit number)" would be better.
My other point is that "order of magnitude" is sometimes used in mathematics to mean "asymptotic to".
For extremely large numbers, a generalized order of magnitude can be based on their double logarithm or super-logarithm.

'Six orders of magnitude' is a math-speak for "a million-fold" so Nick was telling us on the one hand what we already knew, that Moore's Law has been operating since the late 1960s, and on the other hand, professing a belief that it would continue to operate for the foreseeable future.
This is the broad extension of the use of sensor devices in cars in order to optimise engine performance, except of course that sensors will be embedded everywhere, allowing the optimised behaviour of just about any device you can think of in conjunction with any other.

To help students understand orders of magnitude, and also perhaps to brighten up physics teaching for years 10 to 13, the UK Institute of Physics' Post-16 Physics Initiative has devised a competition for students to design a poster illustrating the key orders of magnitude of the units used in science.
It is hoped that some of the winning designs will eventually be used to produce a set of posters for laboratory walls.

Indeed, such tools are particularly valuable in helping foster and even accelerate knowledge flow among other early adopters (who tend to correlate highly with the 'thought leaders' involved in the knowledge that you want to be, well, flowing)!
So it looks like my problem is an order of magnitude thing.
Of course, it may also be something to do with my less-than-perfect organization of self in how I do things like email and read RSS feeds, but I'll pass on that for the moment (as well as my constant email guilt trip).
