Cardinal direction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, cardinal directions or cardinal points are the four principal directions or points of the compass in a plane.
An ordinal or intermediate direction is one of the four compass directions located halfway between the cardinal directions: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest.
Each direction is often identified with a color, and geographical or ethnic terms may contain the name of the color instead of the name of the corresponding direction [1] [2].

Ordinal number   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Ordinal numbers, or ordinals for short, are numbers used to denote the position in an ordered sequence: first, second, third, fourth, etc. (See.) In mathematics, ordinal numbers are an extension of the natural numbers to accommodate infinite sequences, introduced by Georg Cantor in 1897.
An ordinal is finite if and only if the opposite order is also well-ordered, which is the case if and only if each of its subsets has a greatest element.
Ordinals which don't have an immediate predecessor can always be written as a limit of a net of other ordinals (but not necessarily as the limit of a sequence'', i.e.

By making representative, ground-level wind speed measurements at the accident site on two separate occasions, when wind directions and their speeds were similar to those at the time of Plaintiff's accident, the effect of localized wind shadowing in the entranceway area that had been created by the building was easily demonstrated.
It was found that the sidewalk level wind speeds in the entranceway area where the morning newspaper had been tossed were reduced by nearly ten-fold, and that the gustiness of the winds was eliminated in the wind shadow zone.
Similarly, a south wind would be assigned an ordinal direction of 180°, while a westerly and a northerly wind would be assigned ordinal directions of, respectively, 270° and 360°.

Thus the ordinal directions are marked within a square, forming the third symbol (The national flag of the U.K. has the same symbol with the lines showing the cardinal and ordinal directions).
The lines showing the cardinal directions are extended by turning 90 degrees up to the corners of the squares (pointing to the ordinal directions); the result being the formation of two types of Swastika symbols, which is the fourth symbol.

So, paradoxically, even though the relative directions might give the *appearance* of greater realism, the overall effect was actually *less* realistic than games that use compass directions, because compass directions would give the player the same sense of the area we'd have in real life.
The supposedly relative directions really turn out to be just a different set of names for an absolute direction scheme, inasmuch as any given room has a certain fixed orientation - or, rather, the player character has a fixed orientation in each room.
