Ordinance (Mormonism) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These and several other ordinances may be performed vicariously or by "proxy" in behalf of the dead, and Latter-day Saints believe that it is up to the deceased to accept or reject the ordinance in the spirit world.
Ordinances on behalf of the dead are performed when a deceased person's genealogical information has been submitted to the temple.
The emphasis on the physical aspect of the ordinance is the basis for the Mormon practice of performing ordinances vicariously for the dead.

Temple (Mormonism) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
In Mormonism, a temple is a building designed as a house of God and often reserved for special forms of worship.
Temples and their associated ordinances are a vital part of the theology of the LDS church.
Latter-day Saints perform these proxy ordinances because they believe deceased non-Mormons are in a condition referred to as "Spirit Prison." They believe that Christ went to the righteous spirits in prison and organized a great missionary force to teach the gospel to the dead who, in turn, may be baptized by proxy in a temple.

It is a notorious fact, and a refutation is challenged from any source, that the Mormon youth and children are precocious in wickedness to a remarkable degree, and are entirely lacking in that simplicity and innocence which is an attribute of children almost the world over.

Mormon America - The Power and the Promise
The Book of Mormon, for example, the first work of Mormon scripture, purports to be a historically true account of pre-Columbian people in the New World; it teaches that they were part of the Tribes of Israel who were visited and converted in America by the resurrected Jesus.
What matters to Mormons is their "living prophet"; the Ostlings are correct to quote the late Mormon Church president and prophet Ezra Taft Benson that "a living prophet trumps dead ones." But when the institution is a church and a religion, then the rhetorical tools by which that trump is played matter a great deal.
Plainly, among Mormons and their leaders, a certain anxiety and a certain lurking concern for inauthenticity and illegitimacy--has the all-knowing God really changed His mind or was it just His leaders?--remains, even with the implicit acceptance that what really matters is not doctrine for its own sake but the forward march of the corporate church.

Did Jesus Establish Baptism for the Dead?
Although the Book of Mormon is described as containing “the fullness of the everlasting gospel” (Doctrine and Covenants 27:5), and although baptism for the dead is a central teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, according to the LDS church, the Book of Mormon contains no reference whatever to the practice, either direct or indirect.
In fact, Book of Mormon teaching seems to clearly preclude the practice on several counts; the evidence on this point is considered later in the article.
Mormon writer Gregory A. Prince wonders at the coincidence that the book of Moroni, which contains this sole Book of Mormon reference to infant baptism, was produced in 1829, one year after the death at birth of Joseph and Emma’s firstborn child in 1828.
