Ultimately however, Ordinary Decent Criminal plays as a poor man’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (back when Guy Ritchie could make good movies) and while it doesn’t match the aforementioned’s wit and panache, it manages to maintain the same quick pacing and a similar quirky tone to keep the viewer interested.
Ordinary Decent Criminal maintained a very tight and detailed image for the most part, with slight amounts of grain softening up some of the darker sequences in the film.
Ordinary Decent Criminal was a somewhat ordinary … but quite decent little film that was a welcome addition to my DVD collection.

Ordinary Decent Criminal is a film starring Kevin Spacey, and any film with Kevin Spacey in it is worth watching in order to get one of his quiet, low-key performances.
Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey), a heavily fictionalized version of the aforementioned Cahill, is the ordinary, decent criminal who commits robberies that keep the police in a state of complete confusion, much to the delight of the people of Dublin.
The fact that this film is about a famous Irish criminal, and that it has been almost universally panned by UK critics, was not an encouraging sign as I sat down to view it.

Ordinary Decent Criminal unfortunately does fall into the trap of using these readily identifiable traits to try and warm the audience to what is really quite an uneven and directionless movie.
Ordinary Decent Criminal is the story of Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey) and his gang of likeable criminals.
My overall feeling is that Ordinary Decent Criminal is just on the downside of being a good movie, but certainly well upwind of being awful.

These criminals are more like Sgt. Bilko's outfit than a group of thugs and robbers, and the Gardai are potrayed as even stupider and country-fried than they were in The General.
Ordinary Decent Criminal is a huge disappointment coming, as it does, from filmmakers and performers of this calibre.

Since an incident many years beforehand when he and his family witnessed their entire housing block being trashed and destroyed by a team of Irish police (the Garda) he has had little respect for the authorities and become a man of his own (not particularly legal) means.
Ordinary Decent Criminal may not be a modern cinema masterpiece, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to - thanks in no small part to the performance of Kevin Spacey, who seems to be able to lift any film to a watchable level simply by being in it.
For all its failings, though, this is a snappily directed, unassuming and enjoyable romp, and while it shouldn’t be taken the least bit seriously (and certainly not as gospel) it’s a lot better than a couple of other recent UK “crime-core” efforts in both the filmmaking and performance departments.

Ordinary Decent Criminal (shot in the U.K., Germany and Ireland) was a fairly loose and thinly veiled adaptation of the John Boormans critically acclaimed book, The General.
Directed by Thaddeus O' Sullivan with the screenplay having been written by Gerald Sternbridge, Ordinary Decent Criminal was considerably well-structured despite the lack of true detail to which the main character was based.
Ordinary Decent Criminal (1999) hosts many moments of generally amusing comedy (such as when Spacy hilariously falshes his naked rear end to some irritatingly condesending policemen) whilst there are a host of impressive action scenes, particulary the exciting climax of the film.

"Ordinary Decent Criminal" is what happens, I suppose, when a few hundred actors gain access to photographic equipment and drugs.
"Ordinary Decent Criminal" borrows from the same story, which didn't need to be told again, especially not in this dumb way.
The character, renamed Michael Lynch and played by Spacey, is shown as a loveably crafty and confident rogue, who is always outsmarting incompetent police with such hilarious tactics as kidnapping and car bombs.

Recasting Cahill as a Keyser Soze with a sense of oily humor and renaming him Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey), Ordinary Decent Criminal is extraordinarily lightweight blather free entirely of the sense of scale and place of Boorman's film.
Always shameless, it's at the least passable in Ordinary Decent Criminal as perhaps a part of the character and not entirely indicative of Spacey's faith in his own healing touch.
Released by Miramax and Buena Vista to DVD after a few years on a shelf somewhere, Ordinary Decent Criminal features a nice 2.35:1 anamorphic video transfer that looks surprisingly grainy during one nighttime sequence but is otherwise sharp and pleasing.

Maybe I should have guessed that a film about an ordinary, decent criminal would be, well...
The plot is fine, the acting is good, and the film retains a reasonable interest level, but you're never very absorbed by it.
In this film Spacey plays and Irish criminal, called Michael Lynch, and proceeds to spend the whole film, stealing things with great finesse, much to the annoyance of the Gardi, who keep trying to pin him on something, as well as playing around not only with the Gardi but with his sister-in-law as well.

This is Albarn's first major solo attempt at a film score and it is something of a mixed bag; though there is so little of his score on this album, you will need to check out the film to hear what I mean.
Aside from these songs, there are two score tracks (totalling under 5 mins); the very brief and frantic 'Chase After Gallery' and the film's main theme 'Bank Job'.
The latter is a wonderful swinging tune, with underlying synth tension, capturing the spirit of these "Ordinary decent criminals" very well.

In Ordinary Decent Criminal, they are not adequately explained, or portrayed, at all.

Despite having Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino and Colin Farrell in the cast, "Ordinary Decent Criminal" was never released in theaters.
He also pulls the trick where he leads the tailing cops out to the middle of nowhere until they run out of gas and he refills his tank from a portable gas tank in the trunk.
Perhaps this is another example of two films getting made at the same time and the idiot-producers of this film had already spent so much money on actors and whatever that they had to go ahead and finish.

To give it some credit ODC is unashamed in setting itself out as a comic strip film, but the yarn element to this story soon recedes as the gut wrenching accents of the non Irish cast take centre stage.
I know Kev and Linda are box office, but what's the point when the accents they put to very,very dodgy dialogue is out of the Julia Roberts school of infuriating accents.
Back to the plot, and basically we follow lovable ODC Michael Lynch (loosely based on the late Martin Cahill *see the General*) who as well as leading a gang of daring and impressionable friends also falls out with the local IRA ganglords.
