After Nakhchivan City, Ordubad is the most important town in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, having once been the capital of a semi-independent sultanate, which eventually yielded sovereignty to the Russians tzars in 1828.
Situated near the river of the same name - a tributary of the Araz - Ordubad is nevertheless a mountain town, built at 850m under the imposing presence of the Zangezur range.

In 1834 a census enumerated a population of 11,341, Muslim and Armenian, for Orduba@d and its 52 dependent villages.
Orduba@d is now one of the main towns, after the capital Nakò±eva@n, of the Nakò±eva@n Autonomous Republic (an enclave of the Azerbaijan Republic) and the center of one of the Autonomous Repubic's three regions, bearing the same name Orduba@d.

At certain periods of history Ordubad has been a semi-independent sultanate and for much of the Middle Ages it was a centre of learning which attracted the great scholars of the day including the family of Nasruddin Tusi, whose daughter was buried here.
Perhaps Ordubad's most famous recent son was Mammed Ordubadi, nationally renowned author of historical novels (eg Patpol Baku) and the librettist of the classic opera Koioglu (though he lived most of his life in Baku).
The historical quirks which have nudged the whole of the Nakhchivan enclave out of the historical mainstream have been particularly cruel to Ordubad which is now in an artificial geo-political cup-de-sac.

At the beginning of the 17th century, due to the forceful expulsion organized by Abbas I Shah the population of many of the Armenian towns and villages (Goghtn, Nalhichevan, Yernjak, Jugi, Jauk) fled from their homeland.

One ancient myth of the region says that Noah with his ark was looking for a place to land after the deluge.
According to the myth, first his ark hit the rock and Noah said, “Maybe it is a mountain” and thus gave the name for Mount “Belke” (“Maybe” in Azerbaijani) that stands uptown Ordubad.
