 Delaware Chapter II
IRON ORE BEDS.— The ore beds of the State are found only in New Castle and Sussex Counties, and are entirely bog-ores, which are of two kinds "dome" and "layer." The former is found mostly in New Castle County; the latter in Sussex County.
In Sussex County, along the streams that flow westerly into the Chesapeake Bay and largely in Nanticoke Hundred, bog-ores (layer) have been known to exist from about the middle of the last century, and from 1763 to 1776, large quantities of ore were raised, smelted and the iron shipped to England.
No ore has been raised in Sussex and Kent County for several years, as the visible supply was nearly exhausted; but new deposits are slowly being made, and at some future time the iron industry may again be made a source of profit to the State.

 Industrial Biography - CHAPTER II.
The first indications of revival in the iron manufacture showed themselves in Sussex, a district in which the Romans had established extensive works, and where smelting operations were carried on to a partial extent in the neighbourhood of Lewes, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, where the iron was principally made into nails and horse-shoes.
When cannon came to be employed in war, the nearness of Sussex to London and the Cinque Forts gave it a great advantage over the remoter iron-producing districts in the north and west of England, and for a long time the iron-works of this county enjoyed almost a monopoly of the manufacture.
Among the Sussex masters who settled in Glamorganshire for the purpose of carrying on the iron manufacture, were Walter Burrell, the friend of John Ray, the naturalist, one of the Morleys of Glynde in Sussex, the Relfes from Mayfield, and the Cheneys from Crawley.

With its abundant supply of ore and charcoal, the area continued to be a principal centre of the British iron industry and in 1253 the Sheriff of Sussex was called upon by Royal Decree to furnish the Army with 30,000 horseshoes and 60,000 nails.
In this, the ore and fuel were continually added to the top of the furnace and molten iron was drawn off from the base for casting.
By neglecting the proper mixture of chalk, etc. with the ore, the flux did not separate as it should have done to run off and it remained a mass from which the iron could not be drawn off to be run into the pigs (moulds) for the forge.

 Stanhope History
Great quantities of iron ore were available at the nearby Stanhope or Hude Mine (near present-day Pennyton Homes), at the Roseville Mines in Byram Township, and in Morris County at the Dickerson Mine on Mine Hill.
Andover and its surrounding areas had considerable limestone deposits that yielded the all-important flux required for separating the iron from the impurities in the ore. For all of the above reasons, it was not surprising that early iron concerns were attracted to Stanhope.
