Ore grade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ore grade is a measure that describes the concentration of a valuable natural material (such as metals or minerals) in its surrounding ore.
Ore grade is used to assess the economic feasibility of a mining operation: the cost of extracting a natural material from its ore is directly related to its concentration, and the cost of extraction must be less than the market value of the material being mined for the operation to be economically feasible.
Ore grades are usually expressed as an amount of material per ton (or tonne) of ore. The ore grade required for economic feasibility varies widely based on the value of the material being mined.

The Transport System for High Grade McArthur River Uranium Ore
Ore is mined 24 hours a day, although the production rate may be intermittent depending on the sequencing of the mining machines.
From the storage pachucas the ore is pumped via an ore mix tank to a 12 m diameter load-out thickener, which provides a consistently high solids content in the ore slurry, thereby minimising shipment of water to Key Lake.
McArthur River ore slurry is withdrawn from the ore storage pachucas and pumped to the neutral thickener underflow tank.

Ore is also present locally in the upper few feet of the Moenkopi and De Chelly Member (Early Permian) beds where either unit and the Shinarump ore-bearing channel strata are in contact.
The uranium-bearing ores in the Shinarump beds are described, based on metal content, as either vanadium-uranium ore, copper-uranium ore, or uranium ore containing minor amounts of vanadium and copper.
In its early years, the openpit yielded both higher grade ore along with considerable low grade ore. Later, the openpit yielded only low grade ore. Mined high grade ore was shipped directly to a mill, while low grade ore was stockpiled onsite for later processing to concentrate the uranium and vanadium values.

GRADE: The amount of metal in each ton of ore, expressed as troy ounces per ton or grams per tonne for precious metals and as a percentage for most other metals.
The location, quantity, grade, geological characteristics and continuity of a mineral resource are known, estimated or interpreted from specific geological evidence and knowledge.
An indicated mineral resource is that part of a mineral resource for which quantity, grade or quality, densities, shape and physical characteristics can be estimated with a level of confidence sufficient to allow the appropriate application of technical and economic parameters, to support mine planning and evaluation of the economic viability of the deposit.

CSIRO - New fast sensors to revive ore sorting
Sorting ore particles before processing can cut downstream costs, limit environmental harm by reducing mine wastes and improve ore quality and mineral recovery.

Since phosphorous compounds in the ore made a finer dust than the magnetite, Edison tried using a gentle air current to blow them in a separate receptacle, where they were collected and sold for use in paints.
The powdered ore was mixed with water, and then a glue was stirred in; the result, which looked like modeling clay, was injected under pressure into small round molds and fired to a rock hard consistency.

Ore Milling - The Edison Papers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In this device, sand from tailings or crushed rock was poured through a hopper so that it fell in a thin, broad stream in front of an electromagnet that attracted magnetic particles, such as iron, into one receptacle while non-magnetic particles fell straight through into another bin.
His first ore venture involved the concentration of iron found in fl sand during the early 1880s, but his more important effort took place between 1887 and 1898 when he designed a whole system of mining, crushing, separating, and concentrating the ore into briquettes at a mine in northern New Jersey.
After pouring over $2 million of his own money into this venture, Edison was forced to abandon it when the discovery of large iron ore deposits in the Great Lake region made Edison's concentrated low-grade ore too expensive for steel mills.
