  HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT
Oregon City was incorporated in 1844, the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains, as the number of immigrants was growing and Oregon City boasted 75 buildings.
Oregon Territory was officially created in 1848 and Oregon City was designated as the Territory’s first capital, an honor it held until the capital was moved to Salem in 1852.
Oregon City’s position as the hub of the Territory declined in the 1850s as the capital was moved to Salem and Portland surpassed it as a population and shipping center.

 Oregon City Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Oregon City Bridge is a steel arch bridge that spans the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, Oregon.
In addition, it is the only bridge in Oregon to be encased in gunite, which protects it from corrosion due to the sulfur dioxide emissions from paper mills south of the bridge.
The bridge was built as a replacement of a pedestrian suspension bridge constructed in 1888.

 Drain Oregon Covered Bridges
In addition to being one of the oldest bridges in Oregon, this is one of the few that is within city boundaries.
The original bridge was built in the 1870's as part of the overland stage route from Roseburg to Scottsburg.

 Oregon Covered Bridges - Drift Creek Covered Bridge
Originally built south of Lincoln City only 1.5 miles from the coast, the bridge was considered the oldest remaining covered bridge in Oregon.
After the bridge was bypassed with a concrete span in the mid-1960s, Lincoln County passed an ordinance preserving the wooden structure as an historical memorial to the Lincoln County pioneers.
In the pioneer spirit that this bridge represents and through hardship and strife, their monumental efforts resulted in the resurrection of the bridge which now stands in a small, beautiful park-like setting.

This was built by renowned Oregon bridge designer Conde B. McCullough, and was named the Most Beautiful Class C Steel Bridge of 1933 by the American Institute of Steel Construction.
The bridge over the Willamette here was also constructed by McCullough, and it replaced a suspention bridge that stood here.
Other things to note in Oregon City are the elevator to the top of the bluff, and the railroad tunnel at the south end of downtown.

The container detached from the truck and together with rubble from the bridge fell onto northbound Oregon 99E, said Mike Bates, a senior trooper with the Oregon State Police.
The cost of repairing the bridge and traffic lights hasn’t been determined, and the bridge doesn’t appear to be structurally damaged, said Dave Thompson, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

It has the longest main span of any bridge in Oregon and, until the completion of the Caiyuanba Bridge, is the longest tied-arch bridge in the world.
The bridge was open on November 11, 1973 at a final cost of $82 million, most of which was financed by the Federal Highway Administration.
The bridge is 2,152 ft. in total length with a main span of 1,255 ft. The top of the arch is 381 ft. tall and the main span has 175 ft. of vertical clearance.
