OCF is more strictly a hippy fest (whatever the term even means these days) whereas at Burning Man there is a much higher quotient of other stripes of freak, from anarchist Mad-Maxians to bespectacled engineers who build flaming gyroscopic rocket dragons in their spare time.
Having said all that, the people at OCF are by and large the sweetest bunch of folks i've run across, and i hope the Fair keeps flying its flag for a long long time.
The fair this year was so macgical I had helped volenteer out there and it was amazing I had the time of my life I had never seen so many different things in one place.

I find the fair stages to be too white to be entertaining, and I cannot watch even one more woman shake her booty from stage while talented women sit it out on the sidelines.

Living in Elmira, just a number of blocks from the Oregon Country Fair (which is in Elmira, even though they say they're in Veneta), there's a lot to endure around the time of the fair.
As usual, we went to the fair on Sunday, which is the best day for families and old folks like us.
So far as I am concerned, the belly dancers, the topless and scantily dressed women, and the the general atmosphere of the fair were much more distracting to my testosterone addled mind than usual.

In the OCF Navy, we too have a ritual involving grog, but mainly it is about sharing stories, giving thanks, toasting and boasting.
After someone says, "T'ope Usall Wassail!", the proper response is; "T'ope" We are looking forward to OCF 2004 and we'll have some fresh pix on the site after the fun is over.

What's curious for me is why the aging of the Country Fair in particular, coupled with the changes in my own life in the past 10 years have caused me to feel so cynical about a community in which I have invested so much, and in which I still have such strong belief.
Even in years I didn't actually attend the Fair, I looked forward to the Fair's opening every summer, and I always knew which weekend in July it was being held.

It was another great Fair by all accounts---and this even though I managed to over amp my back just a few days before the event.
Hilary bought Riff's bus right after the Fair and I have been playing mechanic on it in order to help get it ready for Burning Man. Lots of prep is now happening for the Culture Jam which will be held in and around Main Camp.
This was through a combination of things I think; a mild Winter, an evolving awarenes, a ban on hay and straw because of fire danger, invigorated Decon and Recycling crews, the cumulative effect of massive cleanup efforts, and the most recent restorative rain.

These are people who voluntarily and without pay entertain fair-goers and fair family alike all weekend long who don't, technically, have the "right" to be at the fair after hours.

We didn't get to the Oregon Country Fair this year.
The OCF is a favourite event of ours as the Organizers consistently provide a safe, friendly and music-filled carnival environment where topfreedom and nifty body painting is considered normal, healthy and fun.
Merchandise prices were about average for fairs of this nature, and there were 350 or so booths to sample.

The name of the booth was taken from the ever-popular The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkein, in part because of the fair's magical nature and forested surroundings.
Due to the ravages of time, and the inevitable effect of gravity, the loft was removed before the 1996 fair.
