Oregon, with an area of 254,819 sq km (98,386 sq mi), is the ninth largest state in the U.S.; 52.3% of the land area is owned by the federal government.
Oregon was established as a territory in 1848; as originally established, it covered all the area between the 42d and 49th parallels, from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and included present-day Washington and parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

The treaty was negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State James Buchanan, who later become president, and Richard Pakenham, envoy to the United States and member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom for Queen Victoria.
The Oregon Treaty set the U.S. and British North American border at the 49th parallel with the exception of Vancouver Island, which was retained by the British.
The U.S. portion of the region was organized as Oregon Territory on August 14, 1848.

In 1846, the United States and Great Britain finally settled their long-standing dispute over the boundary between the U.S. and British Canada in the Oregon Country, a dispute that became known as the "Oregon Question." The first official attempt by the two nations to settle the dispute was in 1818.
In briefly listing the general terms of the new treaty, he reminded his readers that those were the very terms he had called for the previous January and reported the "natural satisfaction" he took "in the accurate fulfilment [sic] of the views we then" expressed.
      It is ironic that of the four articles of the treaty, all of which would lead to controversy between the two nations, the issue of the free navigation of the Columbia River by the Hudson's Bay Company was the first to be raised by the press, since it would be the most quickly resolved.

Prior to Polk’s election in 1844, a treaty to annex Texas was defeated by a vote of 35 to 16.

This arrangement ended as U.S. settlement grew and Polk was elected on a platform of "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight"; after a war scare with the United Kingdom, the two nations negotiated the 1846 Oregon Treaty, partitioning the region along the 49th parallel and resolving most (but not all) of the border disputes.
The U.S. portion became the Oregon Territory; it was later subdivided into territories that were eventually admitted as states.
