It was named in the 1880s by a civil engineer working for the Oregon and California Railroad for his home town of Medford, Massachusetts.
Medford was founded along the Oregon and California Railroad line in the Bear Creek Valley, which is part of the greater Rogue Valley.
This was due to many possible reasons: it was at a midpoint position along the rail line, it was at the center of Bear Creek Valley, and it was near the crossing of Bear Creek.

The Oregon and California Railroad was formed from the Oregon Central Rail Road when it was the first to operate a 20 mile stretch south of Portland in 1869.
This qualified the Railroad for land grants in California, whereupon the name of the railroad soon changed to Oregon and California Rail Road Company.
In 1887, Southern Pacific assumed control of the railroad, although it was not officially sold to Southern Pacific until January 3, 1927.

Railroad construction, beginning first in the 1860s with the portage lines that bypassed the rapids and falls on the mid-Columbia River, vastly expanded the geographic ties between resources and markets.
Railroads constructed after 1870—from Portland to the California border, eastward along the Columbia River corridor, and across the Blue Mountains and along the Snake River into Idaho—served as “engines of empire,” according to historian Carlos Schwantes.

The railroads were actually delaying settlement by withholding land they were supposed to sell to the public; the railroads should not be rewarded for their speculative holding of lands.
The Oregon and California forfeiture was preceded by the Oregon land fraud trials of 1903 to 1910.
One was that railroads were not entitled to be rewarded for their speculation: with the backing of the U.S. Supreme Court, the railroad was paid only the $2.50 per acre it was supposed to have received.

Henry Villard was born in Speyer, Germany in 1835, the son of a Bavarian judge.
In 1874, the German bondholders of certain American railroad companies which had defaulted after the panic of 1873, sent him to the United States as their representative to report the conditions of the Kansas Pacific and the Oregon and California railroad.
In April 1879, Villard began the construction of a system of railroads to occupy the valley of the Columbia river and the new wheat and pasture country east of the Cascade mountains.

The peak years of the railroad were from 1906 to 1912, and it was during this period of prosperity that the depot was built.

Southern Pacific officially assumed control of the O&C on May 12, 1887 and on December 17, 1887 the line was completed over the Siskiyous with the driving of a golden spike in Ashland.
While referring to Cow Creek canyon, it states..."It was in this remote canyon area that "the big slide of 1890" caused the relocation of 3 and 1/2 miles of the railroad from the west bank to the east bank of Cow Creek.
The new O&C will be at first a tourist shortline, hauling excrusions for the Oregon Railroad and Transportation Museum; but eventual right of way extensions will take it into wine Grape coultry 9 miles East of Winchester; and along the route, possible freight business may be found.

It's location is in the century-old railroad station which Southern Pacific, it's owner since 1887, said in 1978 was the oldest remaining in Oregon.
General Canby was a friend of the O&C Railroad's chief, Ben Holladay, and a veteran of Seminole, Civil and Mexican Wars, he had arrived in Oregon the week before Canby was mapped, to serve the Pacific Northwest as the U.S. Army's Columbia Department commander.
The building is a reminder of the vision of the 1870 railroad promoters and of the railroads role in the first century of the Canby area's development.

The Oregon and California Railroad subsequently rerouted the railroad through the center of the Rogue River Valley where they proceeded to start a new town.
Land for the townsite and railroad purposes was donated to the Railroad by local landowners, C.C. Beekman, C. Mingus, C.W. Brobeck and Ira J. Phipps, and on December 20, 1883, the town was founded.
Due to the rail stop in the center of the rich agricultural/orchard producing Rogue River Valley, the town grew rapidly and by 1890 Medford housed 1,791 residents (1990 population of Medford was 49,900, while Jacksonville was 2,005).

The payments are a vestige of an 1866 federal land grant to subsidize the construction of a railroad from Portland to the California border.
Because the population of Umpqua County had rapidly increased and met the population requirements for a new county, a new county was created on January 7, 1852, out of that portion of Umpqua County lying east of the Coast Range.
Meanwhile, in Umpqua County the gold mining boom played out, and the population of Umpqua County decreased until finally in 1862 it was absorbed into Douglas County and ceased to exist.

In 1875 he helped reorganize the Oregon and California Railroad and the Oregon Steamship Company and the following year became president of both companies.
The railroad's transcontinental line was completed in 1883 under his management, but the costs so far exceeded the estimate that financial pressures forced him to resign from the presidency in 1884.
Villard's eastern "immigration bureau" drew 30,000 settlers to Oregon in an effort that also benefited the railroad financially.

SALEM -- Ashland's Railroad District is one step away from becoming the newest and largest historic district in Southern Oregon.
The Oregon and California Railroad came to Ashland in 1884, and in 1927, the Natron Cutoff allowed railroad traffic to bypass the Rogue Valley.
The district remained largely intact, but began a gradual decline, after the railroad bypassed Ashland and the automobile shifted the focal point of the community back to Main Street and the downtown plaza.
