New Frames: Taking The Oregonian newspaper to task
Last Sunday, 12/12/04, The Oregonian broke a story about soldiers in the 2nd Battalion of the elite 82nd Airborne Division beating two Iraqi men they thought had been responsible for the death of one of their own, Pfc.
In an article published in Saturday's (12/18/04) edition, The Oregonian makes no mention of the fact that the two Iraqi men were the wrong men.
Although The Oregonian does admit in the first article that the beating was a violation of international law, regardless of the men's innocence or guilt, the paper still gives them a way out by describing the tough conditions the soldiers were facing at the time.

The Oregonian will invite a broader variety of the public to communicate with, educate, and discuss different points of view with editors by asking specific questions in the paper, and thereby soliciting a broader-based response than would normally be self-generated.
For the first project, the Oregonian will employ internal tracking mechanisms (e.g., capturing both the number and type of individuals that contact The Oregonian by phone/mail/e-mail, etc.) in order to define whether "extending the invitation" does, indeed, generate a broader involvement with the newspaper.
The prototypes developed in the crime project will be tested with readers as well as constituent groups (e.g., public safety officials, etc.), to determine the degree to which changes in the type or presentation of crime news can influence perceptions of bias.
