The Schlusselburg (Oreshek) fortress was the stronghold on the left flank of the Leningrad front and played a significant role in the frustration of Hitler’s plan to surround Leningrad completely.
The garrison of the fortress consisted of a rifle company, artillery battery and communication platoon.
In the 498 days of the fortress siege the enemy conducted more than 2000 artillery and air raids; Oreshek was hit by almost 50 thousand shells and by a large number of bombs.

Peter the Great named the town Shlisselburg (“Key Town”) because of its strategic position for both military and trade purposes, and particularly because of the island fortress (Fort Oreshek) nearby.
It has also been known as Petrokrepost (Peter’s Fortress) and Noteburg (when it was under Swedish rule).

 The State Hermitage Museum: Children and Education
There were outings dedicated to the founding of Petersburg; to its life as the cultural, industrial, commercial and military center of Russia from the 18th to 20th centuries; to the history of separate streets, squares and embankments.
In order to broaden the 'horizons' of our interests we traveled to Vyborg and Staraya Ladoga, and we plan to visit Kronstadt, Oreshek and other places which are closely linked with the history of the Neva territory.
