Musical instrument - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The academic study of musical instruments is called organology.
The frequency of the wave generated is related to the length of the column of air and the shape of the instrument, while the tone quality of the sound generated is affected by the construction of the instrument and method of tone production.
They may produce sound by wind (organ), vibrating strings either hammered (piano) or plucked (harpsichord), by electronic means (synthesizer) or in some other way.

Electronic musical instrument - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Simple electronic musical instruments are sometimes called sound effects; the border between sound effects and actual musical instruments is often hazy.
One of the many instruments constructed in the following decades was the Theremin, invented by Leon Theremin in 1917, which used a vacuum tube oscillator to make sounds that depended on the interactions of the user with an RF field.
The most commonly used electronic instruments are synthesizers, so-called because they artificially generate sound using techniques such as additive, subtractive, FM and physical modelling synthesis to create sounds.

 Halfbakery: Musical Fountain Organ
Imagine a fairly ordinary looking organ (no sniggering at the back, please), with a range of tin funnels arranged on the ground in front of it in a semi-circle.
There is one funnel for each key on the keyboard, and the funnels themselves range from cup-sized to bucket sized, graduating in size as they proceed around the arc.
Still, each funnel is exactly the same distance away from the centre of the organ, and there is exactly the same distance between the centre-point of each funnel, no matter what size it is.

It is tempting to draw comparisons to Indonesian instruments, both because of the organ chimes' physical resemblance to angklung, and the association of metal percussion with gamelan.
The name organ chimes seems to have been created in part in reference to the sustaining quality of the tone when the chimes are continuously shaken, and in part to the octave duplication within each organ chime tone, by analogy to the composite nature of organ registrations.
Angklung and organ chimes are mounted in their shakers in such a way that the percussive impact always comes from the right direction to excite the desired mode and minimize the audible effect of the other tones.

Generally, a European lute (the instrument, not the family) has a rounded or vaulted body crafted from steamed and bent strips of wood, a distinctly ornate single sound hole, and a long neck which is bent at the end (at the pegbox) at nearly a right angle.
A myriad of published music collections dating from the 15th century and dedicated to the lute are a significant part of early Western musical heritage.
During the second half of the 16th century, as bass sounding instruments became increasingly important to the musical repertoire, luthiers varied their work by adding lower strings and changing the way these strings were attached to the neck and body.
