 Community of Christ Organs
The Auditorium organ is a superb example of the "American Classic Organ," a concept and design developed by Aeolian-Skinner that mingles the colors and textures of both German and French organs from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with twentieth-century voices developed or adapted by the builder.
The organ’s many pipes are made of a variety of materials, including polished tin, lacquered zinc, a mixture of tin and lead that forms "spotted metal," and polished copper, used for the Trompette en chamade, which extends horizontally from the case.
As with the Auditorium organ, the foundation of the Temple organ is built upon the 32’ Principal.

 FAQ Page
One well-respected organ builder told me that whenever he was called out to a problem with a keyed organ, he could almost guarantee that the problem would be somewhere in the key frame; and it would be almost impossible to fix it without taking the whole thing to pieces.
This is because keyed organs tend to shorten the durations of the notes, whereas keyless organs tend to lengthen the notes slightly.
All that the man inside the organ is actually doing is to feed another music book into the key frame every 10 minutes or so; and to shout at the kids as they try and remove the pipes from the front of the organ to use as whistles.

Not only were we aware of this organ builder's fine reputation, but we were confident that the company would have an interest both in preserving the essence of the Portativ and in integrating the new pipes with the existing ones aurally and visually.
The basic Portativ organ here at Faith Lutheran Church was built by the Holtkamp Organ Company in 1963, under the direction of Walther Holtkamp, Jr., with the wind chest and mechanical action sent to it in 1961 by the Metzler organ company in Switzerland.
Holtkamp's vision was to produce an organ for use in smaller church buildings that would give churches that rich, authentic pipe organ sound at a price that could compete with the newly-emerging electric organ.

The Harvard University Choir > Story Archives > A Manual Labor Of Love
The organ builder Charles Fisk, a former Harvard physicist, designed the organ according to classic principles, with four manuals (or keyboards), with mechanical (tracker) action and forty-nine stops with electric action, an organ less expensive to maintain and one not needing the periodic releathering.
A tracker organ gives organists a direct connection between their finger and the organ pipe itself, meaning they can control how the sound is heard.
Placing the organ there meant the loss of seats.” Instead, the difficult decision was made to place it in front of the Palladian window at the east end of Appleton Chapel.

Jonathan Ambrosino: The state of organ restoration and conservation in America today
Of course, it would be handy to blame all the organists for the destruction of these instruments, but the first prize often belongs to the original builders themselves.
In the 1970s when a real restoration ethic started to emerge simultaneously in both tracker and electric-action realms, restoration meant just that: making the organ go again by cleaning it up and changing only those perishable materials the builder expected would be renewed over the long-term life of the instrument.
The organ was mostly on pressures of between three and four inches and was undoubtedly mild; texture, clarity of tone and seamless blend were the objectives here, not raw decibels: an anti-heroic, rather than anti-romantic organ.
