The introduction of church organs is traditionally attributed to Pope Vitalian in the seventh century.
Today this organ may be a pipe organ, either with electronic controls or a tracker organ with all mechanical controls; or it may be an electronic organ which synthicizes the sound with computer chips.
However, as classical organ repertoire was developed for the church organ and in turn influenced its development, the line between a church and a concert organ is hard to draw.

James Higdon is the Dane and Polly Bales Professor of Organ at the University of Kansas.
Released in 1997 was "Music from Bales Organ Recital Hall" (DCD Records), the inaugural recording of the new Hellmuth Wolff organ in the Bales Organ Recital Hall at the University of Kansas.
She holds a bachelor of music degree in organ performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University (1994), a master of music degree in church music from the University of Kansas (1997) and a doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance, also from the University of Kansas (2000).

Among the additions to the pedal organ were a 16’ Contre Basse and a 32’ Contre Bombarde.
The reason I mention this is that my own personal experience with organ music performed "live" began when I was as a 16 or 17 year old high school student who had the good fortune to be asked on short notice to join my music teacher at one of Mr.

MARTIN JEAN, Professor of Organ at Yale University, was previously on the faculty at Valparaiso University.
JOHN MITCHENER, the Kenan Professor of Organ at the North Carolina School of the Arts and a member of the faculty at Salem College, was formerly the organist of the American Cathedral in Paris.
He is noted for his recitals and recordings on early keyboard instruments, and between 1978 and 1985 he performed the complete keyboard works of J. Bach in a series of 35 concerts.

The organ has been recorded, by Joseph Payne and David Neiweem, the current University Organist.
Recitals have featured many of the different instruments on the campus, including the Fisk Organ, as well as John Brombaugh’s 1975 North German style two manual instrument, housed in the organ studio, and on the 2001 Klop Portative organ, which has been played in many of the most wonderful acoustical spaces on campus.

The afternoon recital will open with Jean Langlais' majestic "Te Deum." This will be followed by the colorful suites of liturgical music that Charles Tournemire wrote called "L'Orgue Mystique." Osborne will then play César Franck's "Chorale No. 1 in E. major," a suite by Clérambault, and conclude with Gabriel Pierné's "Three Pieces, opus 29".
Osborne is the author of a biography of the American concert organist Clarence Eddy published by The Organ Historical Society and has completed work on a critical edition of the organ works of Charles Ives.

The second one, in September 2005, is a new organ in Helsinki, Finland, by the Austrian organ-builder Kögler.
Some of the music is based on hymns or chorales, including several new compositions specifically for this organ and its tuning: taking advantage of the expressive sounds available on this instrument.
The Opus 41 organ, dedicated in May 2005 and made by Taylor and Boody Organbuilders of Staunton, Va., is based upon 18th century North German models.

A music graduate of Oxford University, where he was Organ Scholar of St Peter’s College and Assisting Organist of Magdalen College, David studied the organ with Jonathan Rees-Williams, David Sanger and Nicolas Kynaston.
Whilst organ scholar of Lichfield Cathedral, aged nineteen, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, winning the Turpin and Durrant prizes, and held the Oxford University Betts Scholarship in 1995-6.
The new holder of the joint organ scholarship of the two cathedrals of Christ Church and St Patrick's is David Baskeyfield.

It is my hope that by building this recital hall and then placing one or two nice concert grand pianos in it as well as a nice pipe organ, that I can attract many area teachers to my facility.
The Bourdon of the original organ had the bottom octave of pipes double air fed. One stream of air was voiced weaker than the other and called a Lieblich Gedeckt.
By adding special theatre organ tremulants into the rest of the organ as well as the classical tremulants, I hope to be able to make the entire organ sound authentically theatre or classical as needed.

SWOPS (St. Wilfrid's Organ Preservation Scheme) definitely ‘pulled out all the stops’ to arrange a very special celebration of the refurbishment and enlargement of our Hele organ with a concert by world famous organist Ian Tracey.
It must have been very heartening for all the hardworking members of the SWOPS team, headed by Cliff Stevenson, as it was for the packed audience, to hear our instrument ‘sing’ in all its new found glory with a programme from Handel to Widor and interpretations, one by Ian himself, along the way.
His recordings on the Cathedral Organ have met with wide acclaim from the critics and he is a signed E.M.I and CHANDOS artist.

His debut solo recital disc has been well received by the critics; the Organists’ Review commented on his “clean, articulate and rhythmically vital playing” and concludes by recommending the disc and describing him as a “fine artist and showman”.

Kraybill, the Principal Organist for the denomination, alternates this annual recital between the Auditorium’s Aeolian-Skinner and the Temple’s Casavant instruments.
The recital’s showcase piece is the Third Symphony for Organ by the French virtuoso organist Louis Vierne.
Vierne was the organist at the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris; the Temple’s Casavant was modeled on the designs of the organ builder Aristide Cavaille-Coll, designer of the Notre-Dame instrument, so the performance of his Symphony in the Temple Sanctuary brings together the type of organ and acoustic for which the piece was written.
