W0075: SAXS Study of Acid and Base Catalyzed Organic Aerogels   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
We compare the structure of organic and carbon aerogels prepared by the conventional method (in water and base catalyzed) to that of samples prepared by a new method (in acetone and acid catalyzed), all other parameters (resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) precursor, mass ratio, catalyst concentration, hypercritical extraction, pyrolysis conditions) remaining the same.
Organic aerogels are characterized by exceptional thermal and phonic insulating properties.
Carbon aerogels which are obtained by pyrolysis of the organic aerogel, are conducting materials which can be used as active catalyst supports in fuel cells.

Patent 4206067: Thermally stabilized erosion-inhibited functional fluids containing perhalometal compounds and an ...
In a functional fluid composition comprising a fluid base and containing from 0.0001 to 2% by weight of a soluble perhalometallate or perhalometalloidate salt, the improvement comprising maintaining the conductivity of said fluid above 0.3.times.10.sup.-6 mho/cm by the addition of an effective amount of a high-boiling-point organic base which is soluble in said fluid.
In a functional fluid composition comprising a fluid base and containing a soluble perhalometallate or perhalometalloidate salt, the improvement comprising maintaining the pH of said fluid at greater than 7 by the addition of an effective amount of a high-boiling-point organic base which is soluble in said fluid.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the hydraulic fluid base of this invention consists essentially of a mixture of trialkyl and triaryl phosphate esters with the trialkyl phosphate esters predominating.

Patent 4212937: Heat developable photosensitive materials
When the nitrogen-containing organic base is used together with halogen ion sources other than the halogen molecule or the organic haloamide compound, the sensitivities of the photosensitive materials can be increased but the storage stabilities are remarkably reduced.
For example, with an organic silver salt oxidizing agent such as silver behenate which is relatively hard to be reduced, a relatively strong reducing agent for silver ion such as a sterically hindered phenol including 2,2'-methylenebis(4-ethyl-6-tert-butylphenol) is suitably chosen.
An organic silver salt oxidizing agent as prepared separatively is dispersed in a binder solution or emulsion for a photographic emulsion by means of a sand grinder, a mixer, a ball mill or the like.

Patent 5019645: Process of reducing stereoregular character of carbon monoxide/olefin copolymer with organic base
The precise manner of contacting the polymer and the strong organic base and the molar ratio of polymer to base are not material and will depend upon the physical form and the relative solubilities of the materials being contacted.
If the strong organic base is a liquid at the temperature of the contacting, the process of reducing stereoregular character is often conducted employing a suspension or a solution of the linear alternating polymer in the organic base.
If the organic base is a solid at the temperature of contacting, e.g., an alkali metal phenolate, a reaction solvent or a diluent is employed as a part of the reaction mixture.

Patent 4242252: Preparation of organopolysiloxane resins with weak organic bases
During such condensation, the weak organic base provides improved stability to the organopolysiloxane solution against gelation prior to the time the organopolysiloxane is shaped and cured to a final thermoset form.
The organic base is not a catalyst but serves to at least partially neutralize the acid that is present and thereby improve stability of the organopolysiloxane against gelation.
Desirably, the weak organic base is a trivalent, nitrogen-containing base having an ionization constant in water at 25.degree.

Since most charged organic molecules are soluble in water, and most neutral organic molecules are not, the acid will remain in the basic aqueous solution while the neutral base will be transferred across the interface to the organic layer where it is more soluble.
In this particular case, the organic base forms a bright blue-purple color in solution which will allow you to easily follow where the organic base "is going" during the extraction process.
The organic base should now be free of impurities except for the solvent in which it is dissolved: methylene chloride.

 UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1955 Issue 2 - 003
Grant and Hilty[73] have shown that the morphine base is captured on the strongly basic anion exchanger Amberlite XE 75; this enables the separation of morphine from codeine, which is not captured on the column, but passes into the solution and may be titrated.
In determining alkaloid salts, the necessity of base elution from the column may be evaded by determining the acid component-after capturing the base on the column-with the aid of titration.
Approximately 0.1 gramme of the organic base is weighed accurately and dissolved in 10 millilitres of ethanol (80 %) in a 50-millilitre beaker.

Organic growth should be considered similar to the growth of a pearl.
Organic growth is the only truly robust method of building a knowledge base that adapts to continuously changing environments.
However, early knowledge base implementations did not use the wealth of information available from the customers because the knowledge bases were crafted in a brittle fashion based upon expert systems and similar approaches.

Surprisingly, such derivatives of HA with organic hetero-atom bases have been found to possess beneficial properties in the present invention that includes synergistic treatment and regulation of topical disorders of skin such as skin aging, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, age-spots, canker sores, striae distensae (stretch marks), pimples, and skin redness.
The optimum pH range for each specific derivative of HA with the organic base is determined by first preparing a solution of such derivative by an in-situ method in water or a mixture of water and water-miscible organic solvent, and then determining the pH of such solution of the derivative.
This excludes bases such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, etc. since such bases are not organic in nature and they also do not contain a base-like heteroatom in their molecule.

PSL 6: Frequently Asked Question 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
A: Sometimes when an organic base is recovered from its salt by basification, the recovered organic base does not form a nice precipitate, but "oils out" of the aqueous solution.
After recovering the organic base from its salt and isolating the organic base from the aqueous solution by back extraction, you then must remove the organic solvent.
At the completion of this process, the crude organic base is found in the distillation pot while the solvent is in the receiver flask.

PSL 6: Frequently Asked Question 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
A: Separation of an organic acid or an organic base from a mixture occurs because you are changing a selected organic component of the mixture to its water-soluble salt.
To do this, you add the opposite inorganic compound to the organic component you want to separate, i.e., add an inorganic base if you want to form and separate the organic acid salt.
To minimize the volume of liquid and to maximize the quantity of organic compound recovered from the aqueous phase, you react the organic salt with a concentrated solution of either inorganic base [or inorganic acid] to liberate the organic base [or organic acid], usually as a precipitate.

This information is used by the USGS for worldwide energy resource sssessments based on the petroleum systems paradigm (source rock - reservoir rock relation), and is periodically released to the public.
Analytical data within the OGDB includes Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic mass spectrometry, vitrinite reflectance, gas chromatography, column chromatography, stable carbon isotopes and a number of other related petroleum geochemistry analyses that, in some instances, predate the OGDB.
Throughout the years the Energy Program scientists have utilized these data to not only develop an understanding of the physical and geochemical processes responsible for hydrocarbon formation, maturation, generation, migration and accumulation, but also as a tool to assess the oil and gas potential for sedimentary basins in both national and international settings.
