Farmers Told To Venture Into Organic Pepper Farming :: Bernama.com
Dr Chan, who is also the state's Modernisation of Agriculture Minister, said organic pepper farming, which does not use any pesticides and chemicals, would bring high returns as the demand for organically grown pepper was rising in the global market.
"Organic pepper fetches premium prices in the world market," he told reporters after attending the 22nd annual general meeting of the State Farmers' Organisation (SFO) here Thursday.
Some 67,000 farming families are involved in pepper cultivation and production is expected to increase to 30,000 metric tonnes annually by 2010.

Organic farming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on ecosystem management and attempts to reduce or eliminate external agricultural inputs, especially synthetic ones.
Organic farming is also associated with support for principles beyond cultural practices, such as fair trade and environmental stewardship, although this does not apply to all organic farms and farmers.
This argument also works in reverse, as organic farms can be islands of safety for predator insects and pollinators, without which, more pollination services would be required, and ever-increasing quantities of pesticides would be needed as pest populations acquired resistance to pesticides (to a degree, in both instances this is already the case).

SingaporeMoms - Parenting Encyclopedia - Organic farming
Organic farming is a way of farming that avoids the use of synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and usually subscribes to the principles of sustainable agriculture.
For example, in some organic standards, compost made from sewage is acceptable, a decision based on best-guess science (that the carryover of unacceptable inputs is negligible) and necessity (a shortage of certified organic compost).
This argument also works in reverse, as organic farms can be islands of safety for predator insects and pollinators, without which, more pollination services would be required, and ever new, more powerful pesticides would be needed as pests evolved (to a degree, in both instances this is already the case).

The study compared a conventional farm that used recommended fertilizer and pesticide applications with an organic animal-based farm (where manure was applied) and an organic legume-based farm (that used a three-year rotation of hairy vetch/corn and rye/soybeans and wheat).
The reason was that wind and water erosion degraded the soil on the conventional farm while the soil on the organic farms steadily improved in organic matter, moisture, microbial activity and other soil quality indicators.
Organic farming can compete effectively in growing corn, soybeans, wheat, barley and other grains, Pimentel said, but it might not be as favorable for growing such crops as grapes, apples, cherries and potatoes, which have greater pest problems.

Organic farming increases biodiversity at every level of the food chain — all the way from lowly bacteria to mammals.
Of 99 separate comparisons of groups of organisms, 66 found that organic farming benefited wildlife, eight concluded it was detrimental and 25 produced mixed results or suggested no difference between the farming methods.
According to the researchers, organic farming aids biodiversity by using fewer pesticides and inorganic fertilisers, and by adopting wildlife-friendly management of habitats where there are no crops, including strategies such as not weeding close to hedges, and by mixing arable and livestock farming.

While agri-business style farming which uses chemical fertilizers, genetically altered seeds, and pesticides is still the overwhelming method for American farmers, the organic farming movement has grown significantly in the past decade.
