 Gerber grant funds UA organic farming research
Curt Rom, UA associate professor of horticulture, is leader of a Division of Agriculture project supported by the Gerber grant.
He said it benefits both organic farmers and conventional farmers who use organic practices, such as use of compost and green manure for soil improvement.
Both organic and non-organic growers are interested in economically and environmentally sustainable farming systems, he said.

A Hawke's Bay organics teacher has been named Tutor of the Year by a group of private education providers.
John Ridout, programme director of Taruna College's certificate in Applied Organics and Biodynamics, was recognised for his teaching ability by the New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers.
Mr Ridout developed an interest in organics in the late 70s because it seemed a healthier way of producing food from the land and more in tune with nature than traditional farming.

The recently introduced national standards on organic agricultural production and handling, are likely to have a significant positive impact on the further development of the organic industry throughout the value chain, from farmers to the final consumer, as there will be increased focus on organic products both within the industry itself and amongst consumers.
While the premium for organic versus conventional produce ranged from 11 to 167 percent during our study (store checks), the general consensus is still that our target should be a 10-30% premium.
After October 2002, exporters of organic produce to the U.S. will still be required to comply with all these agency regulations, and will also have to document that the claim of "Organic" is recognized by the National Organic Standards group.

This information will be presented to the various groups responsible for development of organic horticulture in Wales including the WDA (through Farming Connect and the Agrifood Partnership), and DEFRA for consideration and (hopefully!) action.
