Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Oxidation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The oxidation state or oxidation number is defined as the sum of negative and positive charges in an atom, which indirectly indicates the number of electrons it has accepted or donated.
Oxidation numbers are denoted in chemical names by bracketed Roman numerals placed immediately after the relevant element.
Oxygen has an oxidation number of -2 in compounds, except (i) in the presence of fluorine, in which fluorine's oxidation number takes precedence; (ii) in oxygen-oxygen bonds, including peroxide and superoxide, where one oxygen must neutralize the other's charge.

Cellular respiration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oxidation of organic material—in a bonfire, for example—is an exothermic reaction that releases a large amount of energy rather quickly.
The equation for the oxidation of glucose is:
From the complete oxidation of one glucose molecule to carbon dioxide and oxidation of all the reduced coenzymes.

Primary emissions from combustion sources are made primarily of unburned fuel (hydrocarbons), elemental carbon (soot), elemental sulfur, mineral salts, and often contain traces of toxic metals.
Secondary emissions are a combination of ammonia with either sulfuric acid or nitric acid and water, together with a complex mixture of the organic oxidation products of VOCs.
Several classes of chemical compounds are known or believe to contribute to radiative forcing.

"That and for better appreciation of the land's organic detail." He lit up one screen with a transparent-looking relief map, oriented with our flight path.
A tiny blue dot was creeping along one of the crinkly furrows, and I realized the map must be showing the whole southern range we were entering, a thousand square miles at least.
