Organisation Todt (OT) was a Nazi construction and engineering group during the years of the Third Reich, which enslaved over 1.5 million men and boys from countries occupied by Nazi Germany.
Organized by Fritz Todt, the Reichsminister für Rüstung- und Kriegsproduktion, it was attached to the military and was active during WWII.
In 1942, following the death of Todt in an air crash, the group was removed from military control and became part of the central government under the Central Planning Board and Albert Speer.

Fritz Todt (September 4, 1891 – February 8, 1942) was a German engineer and senior Nazi figure, the founder of Organisation Todt.
Following the appointment of Hitler as Chancellor (Reichskanzler) on January 30, 1933, Todt became (in July) Generalinspektor für das deutsche Straßenwesen ("Inspector General for German Roadways") and was involved in the new construction company for the motorways (Reichsautobahnen).
In 1938, he founded the Organisation Todt (OT), joining together government firms, private companies and the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service), for the construction of the "West Wall", later renamed the "Siegfried Line", for the defence of the Reich territory.

In 1938 Adolf Hitler directed two paramilitary labour organisations - the Reichsarbeitsdienst, recruits undergoing pre-military training; and Organisation Todt, a unique mobilisation of private construction firms - to support the armed forces (Wehrmacht) in their duties.
Hard-pressed transport and supply units were further aided by the NSKK, the Nazi motoring organisation, and, from 1944, with military defeat looming, all manpower with any military potential was drafted into the Deutscher Volkssturm.
The total strength of these organisations was about 1,200,000 in 1939, peaking in 1944 at about 3,800,000 - 40% of the size of the armed forces.

Paintings of trees were used to disrupt it's appearance, and even a 'house' was painted on the back!In the lower photo, the entrance slope is just visible between the guard and the white post.

The post war East German secret Police knew of Cohrs old job (as a radio operator before joining the SS Todt Division and getting posted as a guard to Sachsenhausen camp in early September 1944 where he was a non commissioned officer).
There was a Organization Todt (para military construciton group lead by Dr. Todt till 42, then by Speer) but no Division Todt.

It was part of Hitler's formidable line of defences round the north French coast - the "Atlantic Wall".
The defences were built by slave labour - Jews as well as French political prisoners - organised by the Todt Organisation.
They were so strong that in 1944 the Allies preferred to by-pass them, and land on the more lightly defended beaches further west in Normandy.
