Emergence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hierarchical organisation is one example which can generate emergent behaviour (a bureaucracy may behave in a way quite different to that of the individual humans in that bureaucracy); but perhaps more interestingly, emergent behaviour can also arise from more decentralized organisational structures, such as a marketplace.
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Emergent Properties
In some interpretations of quantum mechanics, the perception of a deterministic reality, in which all objects have a definite position, momentum, and so forth, is actually an emergent phenomenon, with the true state of matter being described instead by a wavefunction which need not have a single position or momentum.

 Psybertron Pirsig Pages
Pirsig is suggesting that most people in philosophy are involved in the study of philosophy as opposed to the creation of philosophy – the latter being a “null class” he suggests.
Suffice to say I find Pirsig’s metaphysics of quality and his dynamical layers of values the closest thing to my own real-world experience, which has led me on a search for pragmatic alternatives to the hyper-rationalism of an exclusively scientific view of the world, in day-to-day organisational life.
I kind of agree with Pirsig, that having to know a detailed history of philosophy is not a qualification for actually being a good philosopher, merely a philosophologist.

 Who Are Socialist Alternative?
A belief in socialism from below demands that our organisational structure is reflective of the philosophy, we believe that it is a fundamental essential that all those affected by decisions have a say in making them, it is this philosophy which guides the organisational structure of Socialist Alternative.
Society must be based upon the idea of socialism from below, where the wealth of society is democratically controlled by those creating it as opposed to the failed Stalinist dictatorship and state capitalist system which emerged from the failure of the Russian revolution.
We have come together in agreement on the fundamental principles of revolutionary socialism, agreeing upon the desperate need for revolutionary organisation and practical agreement as a means to forwarding the ideas of revolution and resistance to the system.

 Emergence
In an organisational context, my experience is that the giving of clear boundaries can be liberating.
One of my favourite slogans is, “Don’t just do something, stand there!” but it is really hard in modern organisational life.
Applying the ‘emergent perspective’ to wider organisational change is even further off.

 Professor Wes Sharrock
This has led to his interests, on the one hand, in philosophy of social science and sociological theory, and, on the other, observational studies of day to day work in complex organisational settings.
Work situations in complex organisational settings provided an intriguing environment in which to study practical sociological reasoning.
Following out the first of these interests, he saw that many of the critical problems were adressed in the work of either/or Ludwig Wittgenstein and Harold Garfinkel.

Newtonian science and Cartesian philosophy underlined the organisational models to process information.
In an organisational context this means that both the organisation, its constituting parts, as well as the market environment must be regarded as wholes and not as a sum of parts.
Examples of emergent behaviour are for instance the flocking of birds and the weather patterns (Roos and Oliver, 2000: 6).

For this reason the corporate marketing mix elements, as introduced elsewhere at this site, should be seen as informing an organisational-wide philosophy rather than as encompassing a mix of elements to be orchestrated by a department of corporate marketing.
Corporate marketing should be seen as more of a philosophy rather than a function.

It was John Dewey who brought to our understanding the significance of technology to the coalescence of both working and thinking, in his `philosophy of enquiry' - true vocational education.
Here, as for McWilliam, the dissolution of the traditional (that is to say, `modernist') mind/body Cartesian world, with its privileging of the `pure' mind, is Dewey's main project.

Differences in chools: a question of ethos?
Ethos is a fashionable but nebulous term often employed by organisational theorists, educationists and theologists to describe the distinctive range of values and beliefs, which define the philosophy or atmosphere of an organisation.
Ethos then is not that which is formally stated or documented but is a process of social interaction; it is not independent from the organisation but inherently bound up within it.
Ethos can thus be seen as the expressed wishes of those who command authority within an organisation and it is the means by which individuals within the organisation are committed to what is deemed natural, proper and right (Torrington and Weightman,1989).

Lyotard's misgivings about the subject as a central epistemological category can be understood in terms of his concern for difference, multiplicity, and the limits of organisational systems.

The Relationship of Dialectics and Emergentism
Emergent Evolution deals with emergent qualities of systems that occur at an evolutionary transition from one organisational level to another.
Their Philosophy of Emergence concentrated on consciousness as a phenomenon that suddenly emerged in evolution and that can’t be reduced to the organic structure of living organisms.
Emergentism, a notion put forward by the theory of self-organisation, introduces the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts: The parts are a necessary condition for the whole, but not a sufficient one.

It is a benchmarking and audit framework originally developed in the EFQM but based on the philosophy of total quality management sees the need for holistic development and growth of the organisation.
Importantly results are not measured simply on financial criteria (a theme shared with the Balanced Scorecard, another widely used organisational audit and development tool) but include things like employee and customer satisfaction.
It makes use of a core model which is split into two aspects — results — which are measurable indicators of business success — and enablers — which are measurable indicators of practices inside the organisation which can lead to business success.
