Labour unions are said to be a manifestation of such collective strength.
Since the Dergue, 'mass organizations' such as labour unions, urban dwellers associations, youth associations, women's associations, etc, started being organized to be used as additional instruments of suppression by the government rather than to benefit their membership.
The labour organizations in the country therefore are not particularly noted for their fight for the rights of their members.

It was intended to be the Canadian equivalent of the British Labour Party, and endorsed a variety of reformist labour initiatives.
Its provincial organizations joined the CLP in various stages between 1922 and 1924, and the leaders of the Communist Party believed that they would eventually be able to shift CLP policy to reflect their own policies.
The party may, however, be regarded as a prototype for later pan-Canadian labour parties such as the CCF and the New Democratic Party.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) was established by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as an autonomous institution associated with the League of Nations.
In addition to standards protecting and improving labour and working conditions, there are core standards to guarantee basic human rights, in particular freedom of association and collective bargaining, the abolition of forced labour and child labour, and elimination of discrimination in employment.
In selecting such organizations for development cooperation, preference is usually given to those with a relatively long experience in the geographic area or thematic field for which support is sought, and to those that enjoy the trust of identified beneficiaries and can relate to other social actors, including the government and/or local authorities.

The Code of Labour Practices for Apparel Industry Including Sportswear and the Fair Trade Charter for Garments seek an end to the oppression, exploitation and abuse of workers in these industries (most of whom are women) by advancing concerns of consumers who purchase products made and sold by these industries.
The European Apparel and Textile Organization and the European Trade Union Federation of Textiles also adopted a Charter in 1997, the content of which is limited to a list of ILO core standards.

Disclosure of information about salaries and benefits paid to officials and employees of trade unions and umbrella labour organizations who earn $100,000 or more is strengthening workplace democracy by promoting union leader accountability and enabling access to information for union members.
The requirement to disclose salary information is specified under the Labour Relations Amendment Act, 2000 which became law on December 30, 2000.
The legislation covers officers and employees of parent and local trade unions in Ontario, as well as teachers' associations, employee associations in the fire, police and college sectors, unions in the Ontario Public Service and labour umbrella organizations specified by regulation.

 Harris Government Fulfills Another Commitment to Workplace Democracy | Ontario Ministry of Labour
QUEEN'S PARK - Keeping the government's promise to make unions more accountable, Labour Minister Chris Stockwell today released the names of employees of unions and umbrella labour organizations whose annual salary and benefits were $100,000 or more.
Under the Labour Relations Amendment Act, 2000, which was passed last December, union leaders had until April 1, 2001 to disclose the names, positions, salaries and taxable benefits of any trade union official or employee who is paid $100,000 or more in a year in salary and taxable benefits in the previous calendar year.
The report on salary disclosure is available on the Ministry of Labour website at www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/.
