Religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Occasionally, the word "religion" is used to designate what should be more properly described as "organized religion" – that is, an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organization).
Religions of pre-industrial peoples, or cultures in development, are similarly called myths in the anthropology of religion.
Some believe that religion cannot be separated from other aspects of life, or believe that certain cultures did not or do not separate their religious activities from other activities in the same way that some people in modern Western cultures do.

Organized Religion in a Voluntaristic Society by Nancy Ammerman
Organized religion suffers, these commentators lament, because too many people are doing too much choosing, moving in and out of religious affiliation and from one group to another, seemingly willy nilly (e.g., Marler and Roozen 1993).
Organization, at this level, is not a matter of fitting together a coherent internal belief system or of matching one's desire to a single institution.
If organized religion is best seen in structured practices that occur throughout the larger social milieux, what we have also implied is that the line between "church" and "society," between sacred and secular, is not so neatly drawn as we might have thought.

Working with nine organizations throughout California, six of which are participating in an ongoing evaluation, Irvine made grants totaling over $12 million to nurture and channel the civic potential in congregations-places where Californians can gain knowledge and a sense of power and authority to take up the democratic work of an engaged citizenry.
At the same time, these organizations sought to learn best practices from one another and to build new networks and relationships, outside of traditional geographic or faith boundaries.
