Orkhon inscriptions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Orhon inscriptions" are the oldest known extant examples of Turkic writings.
They were written in what is now called Orkhon script, or "Turkic runes", carved on two monuments which were erected in the Orkhon Valley between 732 and 735 in honour of two Kokturk princes named Kul and Bilge.
The inscriptions were discovered by Nikolay Yadrintsev's expedition in 1889, published by Vasily Radlov and deciphered by the Danish philologist Vilhelm Thomsen in 1893.

According to the inscription Bilge Khagan's reign, from 716 to 734, was beset by economic problems: "I (Bilge) did not reign over a people that was rich, I reigned over a people weak and frightened, a people that had no food in their bellies and no clothes on their backs.
In another example, in the Orkhon inscriptions Elterish's son speaks glowingly of his father's deeds: "My father the khagan set out with 27 men, and as word got around that he was advancing, those who were in the towns and those who were in the mountains gathered, and there were 77 men.

The term of "urug" that was used once within Orhun inscriptions has been a term with the meaning of "offspring, relatives, generation" that was mostly used within the Uighur texts, in the works of Kasgarli and in several modern dialects.

Turkish Literature - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first known written examples of Turkish literature are the Orhun Inscriptions, which were written in the Gokturk alphabet in the sixth and seventh centuries.
These inscriptions which describe the events of that age, along with wars and victories are important, because they prove that the Turks had a rich written language at that time and because these inscriptions provide some clues regarding the lifestyle of the ancient Turks and their notable spirit for freedom.
When the Turks started to convert to Islam, beginning in the first half of the tenth century, radical changes occurred in the social life, and these changes were reflected in the literature in terms of language, structure and content.
