Oribi Gorge is situated along the spectacular forest-cloaked ravine of the Mzimkulwana River as it cuts through the sugarcane farmlands of southern KwaZulu-Natal.
You should give Oribi Gorge at least a full day’s birding and preferably stay over for a night or two to really explore the full range of exciting species to be found.
The primary birding habitat at Oribi is scarp forest, with a combination of both coastal and Afromontane forest birds.

The Oribi spear-leaved conebush subspecies is a geographical variant that differs from the others by sickle-shaped leaves, which grow up to 45 mm long in female and 31 mm long in male plants (Rebelo 2001).
The Oribi spear-leaved conebush is fairly localized, having been recorded only in sandy soil on steep, stony, grassy slopes above the cliffs of the Oribi Gorge near Port Shepstone and on grassland slopes nearby, where the plants are scattered (Williams 1972).
The Oribi spear-leaved conebush appears to be pollinated by insects (William 1972).

The beautiful Oribi Gorge was formed by the Mzimkulwana River many thousands of years ago.
We enjoyed the rainforest surroundings on the way down into the heart of the gorge, where we stopped to pose for some lovely pictures at the river.
At the top of the gorge, near the entrance, were beautiful flowering trees.

We had to keep her away from the edge of the cliff though, as there was a very steep drop into the Gorge.
