Oric-1 review. Your Computer Febuary 1983
Oric is also everything you feared it might be just when you thought it might be safe to go back into home computing.
S can be either 0 for standard character set or 1 for the alternative teletext-style character set which the Oric carries in readiness for the £79 Modem which will connect it with Prestel and the outside world.
The Oric is based around the 6502 processor so the internal workings should not frighten anyone used to conversing in hex with an Acorn Atom or BBC or for that matter a Vic-20.

In addition the Oric had a true sound chip, the programmable GI 8912, and two graphical modes handled by a semi-custom ASIC (ULA) which also managed the interface between the processor and memory.
According to the Oric World website (see External links, below), about 160,000 Oric-1s were sold in the UK in 1983 with another 50,000 sold in France (where it was the top-selling machine that year).
The Atmos failed to turn around Oric International's fortunes, but they persevered and in early 1985 Oric announced several new machines were on the way, including an IBM compatible and an MSX-compatible computer.

 The Oric FAQ
The Oric was notorious for being a fussy loader.
Oric 1 (the last batch had a coloured Oric logo on the case -red, blue and green, earlier models were three tone grey).
Oric produced their own 4 colour plotter which used 4 pens of different colours to write to a roll of 4.5 inch paper (use it to draw designs on your bog-roll!).

Oric Atmos review. Your Computer March 1984
The Oric printer/plotter using four coloured ball-point pens as been restyled to match the Atmos colour scheme as has the long-promised 3in.
In conclusion I think that Oric has got it right this time; the Atmos is what the Oric-1 should have been and, at £170 it is very good value when you compare the facilities with those available on other low-cost computers.
Oric is looking seriously at the possibility of providing an upgrade kit to turn an Oric-1 into an Atmos.

Interlocutory Decision on Length of Defence Case
Oric was named the commanding officer of all Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) forces in Srebrenica municipality in May 1992.
Counts 1 and 2 of the Third Amended Indictment rely on Oric’s position of command to charge him with the murder of six Serbs and the cruel treatment of ten more Serbs in the Srebrenica Police Station.
Oric’s case has proceeded under a cloud of uncertainty while this appeal has been pending.

Case Information Sheet - Oric Case (IT-03-68)
The Trial Chamber thus held that the Prosecution failed to adduce evidence capable of supporting a conviction for the crime of plunder of public or private property and consequently acquitted Naser Orić of Counts 4 and 6 of the second amended indictment.
However, with regard to the alleged murder of Bogdan Živanović in Count 1 and the alleged cruel treatment of Miloje Obradović in Count 2, the Trial Chamber found that there was no evidence capable of supporting a conviction and that Naser Orić consequently did not need to address these alleged incidents.
On 30 June 2006 Tribunal judges convicted Naser Oric of failing to take steps to prevent the murder and cruel treatment of a number of Serb prisoners in the former UN ‘safe area’.

Alexios Chouchoulas: The Oric IDE Interface
There two sets of registers: 1 and 3 (the strange numbering comes from their mapping on the PC I/O space at addresses 01Fx and 03Fx), hence the names of the two select lines.
The most significant 8 lines are decoded by the Oric ULA and provided as the negated line -I/O, which gets asserted whenever the host is accessing the hardware I/O page, page 3 (address 03xx).
When the MSB register is written to, data from the Oric is clocked into the B register, to be output to the IDE device when next data is written to the LSB register.

As a result, the Oric implementation of C is a cut-down version.
Also, C is a high-level language, but, depending on the style and knowledge of the programmer, it may work with all the power of Assembly, or with all the structure and readability of Pascal.
In the case of the Oric compiler, the linker (by Vaggelis Blathras) runs between the compiler and assembler, and there is also an extra program which translates the final machine code object file into an Oric ‘tape’ file.

This was used almost everywhere, from ads to the Oric's manual (where this image was scanned from).
Although this mapping was controlled by on-board logic, there was no provision to use this facility on the unexpanded machine (the control lines were only made available to the expansion port).
The two remaining bits for each framebuffer byte are used to mark the byte as a serial attribute rather than a 6-pixel pattern, or render the 6-pixel group in inverse colours (this usually allowed up to four colours in neighbouring bytes, though the combinations could not be controlled and were typically bad).
