In addition the Oric had a true sound chip, the programmable GI 8912, and two graphical modes handled by a semi-custom ASIC (ULA) which also managed the interface between the processor and memory.
Soon after the Atmos was released the modem, printer and 3-inch floppy disk drive originally promised for the Oric-1 were announced and released by the end 1984.
The Atmos failed to turn around Oric International's fortunes, but they persevered and in early 1985 Oric announced several new machines were on the way, including an IBM compatible and an MSX-based computer.

Oric 1 (the last batch had a coloured Oric logo on the case -red, blue and green, earlier models were three tone grey).
Oric produced their own 4 colour plotter which used 4 pens of different colours to write to a roll of 4.5 inch paper (use it to draw designs on your bog-roll!).

Oric Owner issue 6, February/March 1984, announced that the Oric Atmos had been in full production since the 16th January, 1984, and had been launched at the Which Computer Show in Birmingham.
Noting that the launch of the Atmos had been put in the shade by Sinclair's announcement of the QL, he described the new Atmos manual, published by Pan Books, as 'aeons ahead of the Oric-1 manual'.
Oric, it was reported, were now aiming at Germany, Italy and Spain, and were discussing a distribution deal for America.

Same layout as the Oric Atmos (although the keys have slightly different feel).
The versatility of some of the operating systems (there are nine of them for the various Oric machines) allows any type of floppy drive to be connected, assuming it has a standard floppy connector (the one used on PCs).

Its main difference with the Oric 1 was the keyboard and the debugged ROM (the ORIC 1 had several bugs).
Fantastic, when you know that the Oric had the world record of cables and power supplies you had to use (1 for the computer, 1 for the tape recorder, 1 for the peritel supply and 1 more plug for the TV!).

 About ORIC ATMOS BASIC / C64 BASIC
The first page is of course a zero page that the ROM software might have "reserved", followed by a stack but also a set of Basic pointers at $0300, at least in the case of Commodore and Oric it seems.
Babelfished with some hand adjustments: = After some studies, [I have found that] the BASIC of the commodore = C64 and that of oric ATMOS have the same common base.
Since I was told that the Oric is doing a lot of keyboard and other scans on each interrupt, maybe more than just the Basic would have to replaced to get faster Basic programs (although those would not be Oric Basic programs anymore, but Commodore Basic programs for a non-Commodore computer).

 Oric Vintage Computers
The ORIC computer was made in 1983, as a rival to the success of the Sinclair Spectrum, it was made in the 16k and 48 models, and had a few peripherals such as a pen based plotter.
It was replaced by the Atmos which had a better 'proper' keyboard, and became for a while the machine that many current programming professionals learnt on !
Loose but working and tested oric, needs replacement power pack (see accessories page) but has its tape leads etc. also original manual, and introduction tape, also included are about 8 'given free with this computer blank' tapes which may have a lot of software on but are yours to do as you see fit with.

The model 48 was sold with FORTH language.
Within the year, the original Oric was replaced by the Oric Atmos (on the picture), with improved kayboard, Basic and cassette loading.
Latest model - Oric Stratos - was planed to replace Atmos, but Tangerine Computers was bought by a french company (1986) and Stratos was finally replaced by the Telestrat.

Last week I was the first to order from http://www.cafeshops.com/annexcafe I bought the two designs of bumper sticker and have put them on the back of our vehicle.
Btw, I remember some pictures from a trade show in 1983/84 where Oric had some girls dressed in fl and red mini dresses as part of the introduction of Atmos.
It seems that they protect their members by not telling who runs which shop, but probably you can contact them if you are serious about artwork infringement.

Oric-1 inlay had the Oric's white and blue colors and a separated manual, while the Oric-1/Atmos version had both white/blue and fl/red colors, and the manual was printed on the inlay.
The Oric-1 version had a tape with 2 fast recordings on side A, and a slow recording on side B, and was labelled "Oric".
The Oric-1/Atmos version only had one fast recording on both sides, and was labelled "Atmos / Oric 1".

The crystal generated 12MHz clock in Oric is fed to the ULA at pin 7.
This is used by the control logic later, and divided by 2 to provide the dot clock used for building of the TV picture.
Note that in the timing diagrams of sheet 1, the 1 MHz clock is assymetric, and this is why a 2MHz part is used in Oric.

I am a big fan of Oric Atmos and I have already big collection of new and used machines (about 10 pieces).
I have 5 pieces of the last available original Oric Atmos clones - Pravetz 8D - made in Bulgaria in 1991 and I would like to sell 1 or 2 pieces of them.
It would be intresting what kind of Hardware for the Oric 1 / Atmos where made (Comercial and Privat).

 Harrier Attack from Durell
One of the most obvious differences with Oric software is with the diffrerent ROM versions.
The first main difference is a big red stripe behind the Oric logo in the bottom left corner denoting the fact that this was an Atmos compatible game.
There is also a change from the older tape having ‘ORIC’ in the bottom left of the label, to having ATMOS/ ORIC-1 printed more centrally.

 The Oric Handbook - a Review
Most are Oric specific, but I hope to have a look at a few that were not machine specific, but did mention the Oric.
The Oric wasn’t the best computer when it came to giving error messages.
It is quite user friendly in that it makes an effort to explain things so people new to computers should understand it, rather than the approach of some which seems to expect you to know what programming is about, but just need the right syntax and such to make things clear.

We’ve seen that it was the release of the Atmos that prompted software houses to repackage their material.
The first thing that some did was to check if it worked with the Atmos and if it was OK then they just stuck a sticker on the outside of the cassette box saying “Atmos compatible”.
In fact this particular title has anOric-1 version for 16K or 48K on one side and the new “Oric V1.1 ROM and Atmos” version on the side shown.
