		However Orient Point refers specifically to the very end of the North Fork of Long Island while Orient is the hamlet immediately next to it.
		Orient is the eastern-most hamlet in the town of Southold on Long Island's picturesque North Fork.
		Later, Orient was used as a base of operations by British commanders such as Benedict Arnold and local Tories during the American Revolution to conduct raids on Yankee-held Connecticut.

		The deep and narrow gap between Orient Point and Plum Island is called Plum Gut, and at ebb tide, the waters of Long Island Sound rush through at currents exceeding five knots, creating a churning mix of white-capped waves and dangerous riptides.
		Orient Point Lighthouse had a fairly quiet history from that point, although there is a local legend that says one of the keepers during the 1920s went mad from the isolation and jumped to his death from the outer walkway.
		Views of the light are possible from the Cross Sound Ferry, which operates between Orient Point, NY and New London, CT. Also, East End Lighthouses and Sunbeam Fleet offer excursions that pass by the light.

		The New York State Park system is the oldest in the nation and protects the state's woodlands in hundreds of parks from Montauk Point, a 724 acre park at the tip of Long Island to the massive 6 million acre Adirondack Park, the largest American park outside of Alaska.
		Their alliance with the Iroquois whose territories spanned Northern New York effectively kept the French at bay but they were powerless to stop the Swedes from settling at the mouth of the Delaware River or to prevent the New England colonists from pressing south to occupy the Connecticut valley and the shores of Long Island.
		Resenting the wedge between the New England and the southern colonies, the English refused to recognize the Dutch claim to New Netherland and in 1664, King Charles II gave his brother, the Duke of York, all the land between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers.
