  Oriflamme
As Eudes, who became king in 888, was Abbot of St. Martin, the banner of the church of St. Martin of Tours was the earliest military standard of the Frankish monarchy.
But from the time of Louis VI (1108-37) the banner of St. Martin was replaced as ensign of war by the oriflamme of the Abbey of St. Denis, which floated about the tomb of St. Denis and was said to have been given to the abbey by Dagobert.
At the battle of Poitiers (1356) and Agincourt (1415) the oriflamme fell into the hands of the English; it would seem that after the Hundred Years' War it was no longer borne on the battlefield.

 [Greata Wrolstad] Word For/Word #8: Summer 2005
Oriflamme is a book that is attentive to its image, and Ahsahta press has given sufficient space for the field in Miller's composition.
Of course the mouth's role in kissing is central to Miller's imagery as well: it is where we speak from, and yet while communication is often tied up in the organ of language, it is not always shackled to the contingencies of logic.
His warning, to those poets to whom “both sense and sound were less in the forefront of the mind than the syllable” is that “to step back here to this place of the elements and minims of language, is to engage speech where it is least careless—and least logical” (241).

As Eudes, who became king, 888, was Abbot of Saint Martin, the azure banner strewn with gold fleur-de-lis, of the church of Saint Martin of Tours, was the earliest military standard of the Frankish monarchy, remaining the symbol of royalty until the 14th century when the white standard of Joan of Arc was adopted.
From the time of Louis VI, however, the oriflamme of the Abbey of Saint Denis, supposedly depicting flames and gold stars on a fiery background, replaced the oriflamme of Saint Martin as ensign of war.
At the battles of Poitiers, 1356, and Agincourt, 1415, the oriflamme fell into the hands of the English; after the Hundred Years' War it was no longer borne on the battlefield.

 The Oriflamme
When the Kings of France transferred the seat of government to Paris, the prestige of the local Saint, St Denis, was enhanced and the scarlet flag of the Abbey Church of St Denis gradually ousted the blue flag of St Martin, and "St Denis" became the warcry of the French Kings.
The flag of St Denis, the Oriflamme (the Latin aurea, gold, and flamme) may perhaps have had originally gold streaks among its plain red cloth, but early descriptions are contradictory.
As the French royal battle flag the Oriflamme was replaced by the blue Chape de St Martin now covered (powdered or semé) with golden fleurs-de-lis (the arms illustrated on the shield right) instead of the original picture of the Virgin and Child.

The ori in oriflamme is a gilt (gold) lance; the flamme is a banner (of any color), but also means flame.
The oriflamme is, thus, a symbol of war which leads fighters on to the field of battle.
The poem later in the collection, "stretti, blunt rustic." recalls the themes developed in the opening sequence, as a stretti is, by definition, a fugue-like dialogue between subject and answer where the subject and answer converge; appropriately, alternating stanzas of this poem are left and right justified.

The Oriflamme (meaning 'gold flame') was the sacred banner of the Abbey of St. Denis.
It reportedly accompanied the French kings in their major battles, beginning with Louis VI's 1121 campaign against the emperor Henry V. It is believed that the banner's last appearance was at the disastrous battle of Maupertuis [near Poitiers] (1356), where the bearer was killed and the flag disappeared.
It is sometimes confused with the French king's royal standard (gold fleur-de-lis on blue), which the Oriflamme often accompanied in major campaigns.
