The field of "art history" was developed in the West, and originally dealt exclusively with Western art history, with the High Renaissance (and its Greek precedent) as the defining standard.
Study of the history of art is a relatively recent phenomenon; prior to the Renaissance, the modern concept of "art" did not exist, and art was used to refer to workmanship by generally anonymous tradesmen.
In Byzantine and Gothic art of the Middle Ages, the dominance of the church insisted on the expression of biblical and not material truths.

Art history (also sometimes called history of art, particularly when a university subject) is a term which encompasses several different methods of studying the visual arts; in its most common usage it refers to the academic study of works of art and architecture.
Winckelmann's writings were also early works of art criticism, criticising the excesses of the Baroque and Rococo and instrumental in bringing about the change of taste in favour of sober Neoclassicism.
While he wrote about numerous time periods and themes in art, he is best remembered for his commentary on sculpture from the late middle ages and early Renaissance, at which time he saw evidence of capitalism emerging and feudalism declining.

Entoptics are geometric patterns whose origins are in the nervous system itself, whereas hallucinations are iconic and culturally determined and may be experienced in all senses (aural, visual, tactile, olfactory and synesthetic) not just the visual.
Clearly, the idea that parietal art is solely the production of children seems unlikely, but there is nothing to suggest that child art could not appear alongside "remarkably 'realistic' depictions" by adults, and the remote and "inaccessible" parts of caves might be more easily reached by a smaller person.
It is something of a stretch to try and find the origin of art in art therapy, but the general direction of the thrust, the development of a new behaviour in response to stress, might suggest at least a direction in which to look.

When art empowered humans to associate the drawing with the real object, then speechless humans were able to make an analogy between objects and their associated sounds,a process that eventually led to the first name-sounds.
Cave art served as a reference point for humans, but animal calls have no points of reference since animals are unable to make analogies; their sounds remain instrumental, but never become referential.
Cave art, I believe, was the first sign of the presence of a symbolic function, which we know to facilitate both art and language.
