 Glossary Search Results
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) - This acronym is used to denote equipment that is sold to other companies or resellers for integration into systems.
For example, a hard drive manufacturer may sell an OEM hard drive in bulk quantities with no manual or cables with the promise that it will go into full systems--or maybe external enclosures--and be resold.
Thus, you must have an operating system installed and then the programs run on top of it--unless you have a program with an entire operating system embedded into it, which is possible.

Original Design Manufacturer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is in contrast to a Contract manufacturer or CM.
This model is especially used in international trade, where a local ODM is used to produce goods for a foreign company which sees some advantage in the transaction (such as low labor inputs, transport links, proximity to markets, etc.).
An example is Compal Electronics, which makes notebook computers and monitors, and operates as mass producers for numerous brand companies, assisted by low labor costs, low-cost transport, and the near commodity nature of the physical inputs (in the case of Compal Electronics computer components).

Sorry to interupt, but a quick clarification: OEM when reffered to in computers is a company, such as Dell, MDG, etc. that buy parts, assemble them, and sell the fully built computer for those incapable or unwilling to built their own.
OEM simply refers to it being to do with the company who assembled it as opposed to the company who manufactured the individual parts such as a Seagate hard drive, Sony DVD rewriter, and Corsair RAM.
The second factor, which is more significant, is that the OEM provides the end-consumer with a separate warranty and customer service program--the end consumer generally (though not always) receives no direct service, support, or warranty from the manufacturer.

OEM - Definition of OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
" Where a qualified laboratory does not exist for a given piece of equipment, calibration services may be performed by the original equipment manufacturer" Now are you saying that the big three wants us to send our special piece of equipment to them for calibration.
If the big three buys them from us, and puts them on their cars, then we are the 1st tier supplier but also the OEM, which gives us the freedom to audit our own subcontracters and qualify them.
Their failure to include it in the glossary would seem to imply that they felt the definition of OEM was sufficiently clear in the text of the QS document itself.

Beyond OEM: where the money is - WIP - Original Equipment Manufacturer
The acronym OEM signifies, of course, "Original Equipment Manufacturer." And it is often used in place of "car company" or "vehicle manufacturer." If there are OEMs, then there are other companies that aren't making "original" equipment.
Some OEMs (e.g., the Dodge division of DaimlerChrysler) do better than others when it comes to providing aftermarket products to their dealers (e.g., think of all of those tricked-out Dodge Ram pickups: many of those accoutrements may have come from a dealer).
