Zohar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to Gershom Scholem, most of the Zohar was written in an exalted, eccentric style of Aramaic, the language that was spoken in Palestine during the first centuries of the modern era.
The fact that the Zohar was found by one lone individual, Moses de Leon, and that it refers to historical events of the post-Talmudical period, caused the authenticity of the work to be questioned from the outset.
The Zohar was quoted by Todros Abulafia, by Menahem Recanati, and even by Isaac of Acco, in whose name the story of the confession of Moses de Leon's widow is related.

 Zohar Pritzker Edition
Not only was there no complete, reliable manuscript of the Zohar in the original Aramaic in existence anywhere in the world, but in all likelihood, none ever existed, Though the precise history of the Zohar is still shrouded in mystery, it originally circulated in fragments as a series of pamphlets or notebooks.
No complete Zohar existed until the middle of the 16th century, nearly 300 years later, when the booklets were gathered and printed as a single work in Italy Unfortunately the editors of the printed versions of the Zohar often rejected or revised original readings in the earlier handwritten manuscripts.
In the Zohar the text of the Bible is the starting point, a springboard for the imagination, Daniel Matt notes that, in composing his commentary for THE ZOHAR: PRITZKER EDITION, he sought to elicit the meaning of the original without sacrificing its subtlety and ambiguity.

The Zohar is a particularly difficult text to translate due to the idiosyncratic nature of the pseudo-Aramaic it is written in in addition to the very abstract nature of the material covered.

That means the Aramaic original used to translate from has been carefully compared and emended from old manuscript copies.

An utterly original 1,800-page mix of Torah commentary, parody, erotic poetry, numerology and experimental narrative devices, it crams some 400 subplots into a Chaucer-like tale of a band of traveling sages.
One of these, the Shekhinah, was the Zohar's obsession, the portal through which it pulled believers willy-nilly into the divine drama.
The Zohar's use faded as Judaism absorbed the just-the-facts influence of the European Enlightenment, but it left behind dramatic mementos such as the Bar Mitzvah coming-of-age celebration and the gorgeous Friday-evening song welcoming God's "Sabbath bride." The Zohar also informs the current Cabalistic resurgence, so fascinating to Jews and spiritual adventurers like Madonna.
