Origins International Game Expo is one of North America's most prominent annual gaming conventions, second in size only to Gen Con.
Origins is run by The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) as one of their two shows for the adventure gaming industry.
The historical miniature wargaming section of Origins is administered (under GAMA's overall direction) by the Great Lakes chapter of the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society.

The Origins Awards, presented by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design, are presented at the Origins International Game Expo for outstanding work in the game industry.
Originally, the Charles S. Roberts Awards were given out at the Origins Expo, in five categories: Best Professional Game, Best Amateur Game, Best Professional Magazine, Best Amateur Magazine and Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame.
The Origins Award is commonly referred to as a Calliope, as the statuette is in the likeness of the Muse of the same name.

Civilization is a board game designed by Francis Tresham, published in Britain in 1980 by Hartland Trefoil (later by Gibson Games), and in the US in 1981 by Avalon Hill.
Sid Meier was a fan of this game and developed a computer game containing many of its elements.
He named his game Civilization also, but gave a nod to the board game upon which he based his work (he included a flyer advertising the board game in early printings of his game).

I’m here in Columbus, OH doing some customer visits but I’ll be able to squeeze in about 2 days at the Origins International Game Expo.
The game is very action constrained (this is a Kramer / Kiesling game, after all) and has some bizarre scoring elements – it isn’t uncommon for the player that finished 3rd in the majority to score more points than the 2nd player.
Halfway through the game I was a bit turned off – it felt like a Colovini game with a touch of Trias.
