Comic Book Resources - CBR News - The Comic Wire
Orion remains for me the most interesting and most challenging of the New Gods, probably because of his innately divided nature combined with his fierce commitment to the defense of the cosmos against evil.
In a sense, I'd already done that by Orion 25 (the final issue) and the last issue is both a coda to the entire series as I've written it and a reexamination of the relationship between Scott Free and Orion.
So it may be that comics have lost one of their strengths and I'm not sure they've found anything to replace it with yet." However, Simonson does have some ideas on how to bring in new readers and explains, "Two things really.

And the battles that Orion wages are the symbol of that struggle.
One of the ways superhero comics work is that they use the external battles that are fought as metaphors for the interior lives of their characters.
His hatred of Orion, and the anticipated pleasure of destroying his half-brother blind him to the actual tactical struggle between the two.

On the other hand, DC Comics, and particularly Infantino, were known to be openly contemptuous of the Marvel style at that time, and I could certainly envision a situation where they might jump at any opportunity to declare these books unsuccessful, as opposed to giving them more time to build an audience.
The central protagonist is the now-grown Orion, who finds himself as protector of Earth after freeing five humans from Darkseid’s labs on Apokolips, where he had been searching their minds for the Anti-Life Equation, believed to lay dormant in the mind of a human somewhere on Earth.
Among the Apokolipsian threats that Orion faces are the underwater warriors the Deep Six, the energy vampire Mantis, who raised his own army of “bug people” to invade Earth, and his own half-brother Kalibak, son of Darkseid from a previous, secret marriage.

Orion - PopMatters Comic Book Review
With New God Orion regaining a sense of elevated profile through his membership in the popular Justice League of America, the DC Comics suits figured that Orion would be the best bet for a Fourth World revival.
Within the first issue, Simonson has Orion questioning whether he is indeed the son of evil Darkseid, Darkseid in apparent possession of the 'anti-life equation', and Orion heading for the prophesised match-up with the powerful ruler of Apokolips.
More than that, Simonson's characterisation of Orion as the tragic hero is spot on, as he rails against his own dark heritage with the fanatical zeal of a believer and the reckless disregard of an infidel.

Fanzing 15 - March 1999 - Interview with Walt Simonson
By the end of the 60's, I wasn't so interested in reading Marvel comics anymore as they were starting to repeat stories (Galactus returned for the 43rd time) but DC had picked up steam and I was becoming interested in the problems of actually drawing comics and telling stories.
But comics is a team sport played over time where the teams change and the times change.
However, since the focus of the book will primarily be Orion, I don't know if it'll be necessary during my run on the title to explore Scott's time on Earth in detail.
