Orion is the ideal method of propelling a multi-generational starship such as an interstellar ark to the stars at velocities of up to 10% of the velocity of light.

Nuclear pulse propulsion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nuclear pulse propulsion (or External Pulsed Plasma Propulsion, as it is termed in one recent NASA document) is a proposed method of spacecraft propulsion that uses nuclear explosions for thrust.
Orion reacted small directional nuclear explosives against a large steel pusher plate attached to the spacecraft with shock absorbers.

One design proposed by Freeman Dyson for the "Super Orion" called for the pusher plate to be composed of uranium or a largely transuranic element so that upon reaching a nearby star system the plate could be converted to nuclear fuel.

Project Orion: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth
The idea of an "atomic drive" was a science-fiction cliche by the 1930's, but it appears that Stanislaw Ulam and Frederick de Hoffman conducted the first serious investigation of atomic propulsion for space flight in 1944, while they were working on the Manhattan Project (2).
Orion at first was similar: scientists did practical engineering and engineers built working scale models, all on a shoestring budget (14).
The story of Orion is important, he says, "...because this is the first time in modern history that a major expansion of human technology has been suppressed for political reasons"(52).

Missions that were designed for an Orion vehicle included single stage to Mars and back, from the surface of the Earth, and a trip to one of the moons of Saturn.
A larger version of the Orion drive was planned for Daedelus, an interstellar mission.

In his Project Orion: The Atomic Spaceship 1957-1965, George Dyson tells the story of Orion's physics and politics, and of his father's dreams of a Space Age that never was.
In its final incarnation, Orion was reduced in scale enough to be launched by a Saturn V rocket or one of the even more massive Nova boosters (which were never built).

Orion Nuclear Pulse Drives are enormously powerful compared to modern rockets, and even compared to most other nuclear propulsion schemes.
Orion was effectively killed by the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which made the use of any nuclear weapons in space illegal, and the general hostility toward nuclear technology in the ensuing decades have kept it from reviving in any serious form.
Yet, Orion still has a great many fans within the aerospace and physics community, and recent changes in US nuclear policy could perhaps reopen the door for it to be used as a means of interplanetary propulsion in the future.

 Orion
The nuclear pulse drive was conceived of H-bomb designers Stanislaw Ulam and Cornelius Everett at Los Alamos in 1955.
The nuclear pulse design, dubbed Orion, was a counter-intuitive approach to using the huge potential of nuclear energy for spacecraft propulsion without the costly development required for nuclear thermal or nuclear electric systems.
The final iteration of the Orion design was a nuclear pulse propulsion module launched into earth orbit by a Saturn V. The 100 tonne unit would have had a diameter of 10 m to match that of the booster.
