Olokun is considered the patron orisa of the descendants of Africans that were carried away during the Maafa, or what is sometimes referred to as the Transatlantic Slave Trade or Middle Passage.
In the past Lukumi and Santeria worshippers considered these two Orisa to be manifestations of one other, although westerner devotees know now that they are distinct, but kindred energies that were paired together during the Maafa as a way of preserving both Orisa traditions.

Secondly, there are the regular rituals at the orisa's shrine, and the cycle of these is based on the four-day Yoruba week.[2] Thirdly, there are the annual festivals, much more elaborate affairs involving a large proportion of the population of the town as well as cult members from elsewhere.

Orisa is the fastest growing religion in the United States, according to Henry, who attributed this growth to the presence of large numbers of Cubans and Haitians who had brought with them Santeria and Voodun - their equivalent of Orisa.
Henry said her appearance with Papa Nezer at Orisa feasts raised some eyebrows, not only because she was a white woman, but because Orisa was practised underground during those days and strangers were not exactly welcome.
This time she called for a monument to be erected in his memory and for schoolchildren to be taught about the life and work of this man who, she said, contributed to the building of society.

A simplistic explanation of how the Orisa appear in this collection of paintings I would say is: as representations anthropomorphically expressed of the principles that collectively are, the Creative-Spirit or God in his/her many parts.
The images of the Orisa in the paintings therefore, are humankind-metaphors for both abstract and metaphysical principles, that in action and interrelation offer a key to the understanding of the chaos and creative potential that describes a constantly changing universe.
In my attempt to visually convey a personal reflection of the Orisa, I have experimented with fragmented-narrative, - the Yoruba aesthetic employed in praise chanting or singing - in the hope that some of the brilliance of traditional Yoruba concepts as I understand them shine forth in the unfamiliar landscape of another country.
