History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Orissi was revived in post-independent India, as a neo-classical form, by a group of scholars and dance practitioners/teachers, who formed the group known as Jayantika.
Although Orissi moved from temple to theatre and lost some of its spiritual quality, except as a dramatic device, without this coming togetherof four great dancers and the move into a theatre venture, the dance would have been totally lost to posterity as an art form.
Orissi, the classical style of today in India, has developed from the gotipua repertoire, rather than the mahari repertoire and technique, and overcoming all growing pains, it has finally come into its own and taken India’s dance stage by storm.

Orissi is a form that tells stories, with specific meanings assigned to gestures and movements; they can be put together to make a larger story.
In the case of Orissi, the English thought that the dances were obscene and that the dancers were as well.
Orissi was initially a temple dance done in the temple of Jaganath (you can see how much the British loved their new conquest, by knowing that the god is the root of the word "juggernaut".) by the women who were the wives of the god-king.

Dance in Orissa is attested by an inscription from the 2nd century BCE, but the present Orissi style has its roots in the dance performed at the temple of the god Jagannath in Puri.
The most characteristic stance is the chauka ("square"), in which the feet are spread wide and pointed in opposite directions, with the knees bent such that the upper leg is parallel with to the ground.
The modern Orissi dance form has also been heavily shaped by the shift from temple to stage in the 20th century; this change of venue has been primarily responsible for its classical" form becoming more rigidly defined than in the past.

Either Orissi or Odissi may be considered acceptable in writing.
The confusion over how to spell Orissi, in English, is due to the fact, Indian languages possess some entirely different sounds in their alphabets than does English.
The 'D' pronunciation has a harsh unaesthetic sound, and 'Orissi' more accurately represents the musical sound of the word as said from time immemorial, however both spellings are used interchangeably on this site.
