Overlooking the valley from the north is the Pico de Orizaba, a volcano that, at 5700 m.
Orizaba was already an important town at the time of the Spanish conquest, and it was in Orizaba that La Malinche, Hernán Cortés's interpreter and mistress, was married to the Spanish gentleman Juan Jaramillo.

Orizaba was seized by the Confederacy at Galveston prior to mid-September 1861, according to Confederate Army records.
Whether Orizaba continued to ply to Galveston the next three months or was interned in the Mississippi is not authenticated by available documents.
As a blockade-runner, Orizaba is believed to have carried at least 16 essential Confederate cargoes out of Havana into the Gulf and to have been lost in 1865.

After several months coastal operations, Orizaba, now armed with 2 5" and 4 3" guns, departed New York in April 1942 on the first transatlantic run of her second world war.
From Ulithi, (lrizaba sailed east, transited the Panama Canal, and, as the battle for Okinawa raged, arrived at Tampa, Fla. Decommissioning 23 April, she underwent overhaul and on 16 July she was transferred to Brazil under the terms of Lend Lease.

Most people try for the Big Three: Orizaba (18,410 ft.), Popo (17,930 ft.) and Ixta (17,160 ft.) which are the third, fifth, and seventh highest mountains in North America respectively.
The photo accompanying this article is in the correct orientation and shows Orizaba as seen from the east.
Although the standard routes on Popo and Orizaba are not technical, it is not uncommon to be using crampons and ice ax in conditions where a self arrest would not work.

 Rock Climbing.com View topic - Resources for Orizaba & Ixta
I've found one book that looks good, "Pico de Orizaba" by- Winston Crausaz, but it is out of print, and can not find a place that has it for sale.
Orizaba and Ixta are best from November - March, though both can be climbed all year long.
I did Orizaba a couple of years ago and a few people had some trouble with gear wandering away.

The Citlaltepetl, or Pico de Orizaba, is the highest stratovolcano in Mexico with an elevation of 5,675m, rising over an asymmetrical topography of about 2,900 m to the west, and about 4,300 m to the east.
During the dry season, from January thru April, the huts at Piedra Grande (the base of the Jampa Glacier or normal route) and the hostels or dormitories in Tlachichuca are filled to capacity with eager climbers set to test their mettle on Orizaba.

Our primary goal was the summit of El Pico de Orizaba (5,611 meters, 18,410 feet) which was achieved on Friday 30 Dec by three of the four team members.
Crevasse hazard on Orizaba was evaluated as low so both [of our] teams elected not to use ropes during the climb.
By all accounts this expedition to El Pico de Orizaba was well worth the trip and is highly recommended for those wishing to get some high altitude experience without excessive technical requirements.

On January 10, 2001 the Gruppo Alpino de Tres Amigos consisting of Chris Keller, Shawn Boom and myself, Nels Johnson, gathered in Mexico City to climb the 3rd (El Pico de Orizaba, 18,408 ft.) and 7th (Iztaccihuatl, 17,159 ft.) highest peaks in North America.
We utilized the modern, clean, efficient and unbelievably cheap public bus system to move ourselves and our incredibly huge mound of gear around to the various cities that would serve as our base stations for the climbs.
Just last year on Orizaba three (?) Russians were killed as one's fall dragged the others to their deaths.
