Topic: Ork (Warhammer 40,000)

In the News (Tue 21 May 13)

Ork (Warhammer 40,000) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orks are thus genetically engineered to be muscular, aggressive, and none too bright; their technology is maintained by a caste of Oddboyz who have genetic dispositions to do well at such tasks.
Orks are quite cheap in terms of in-game points, that is, it is possible to build a very large army, colloquially known as a 'sea of green' or 'green tide' from the skin colour.
Ork technology (or "teknologee") is characterised by a constant stream of poorly thought-out experimentation and constantly trying to outdo the competition to build the biggest gun, the largest gargant (a huge land-based walker), or the fastest buggy.

An ork will only go to the dok when he has no other choice, as these oddboyz are infamous for trying out experimental procedures (such as the greatly feared squig brain transplant) on patients while they are under anesthesia (known as "concussion" to other races).

So Orks I bought and Orks I still play, in both their Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 guises.
Warhammer 40,000 Orks are the classic antagonists - they'll fight anybody.
Ork armies are extremely characterful, a modeller's delight.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Developer Interview - Gaming Age
The game itself, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is obviously set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
We're staying true to the Warhammer universe; the units, the races… we're making sure that the universe and mythos is properly represented in the game.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War looks like it will be another solid showing for Relic Entertainment, one that fans of both the Warhammer universe, and the RTS genre in general will be looking forward to.

Preview - Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War // PC /// Eurogamer
Ork stuff is deployed as if by magic and legions of green, warty men traipse over a hill, smack into a chapter of Space Marines.
The orks are cut to pieces by the marines' bolters.
Dawn of War looks to be pitched exactly right: squad-based action strategy on PC with enough unit detail to keep the geeks happy, and access easy enough for those looking to watch loads of pretty things kill each other without having to groan under the strain of 300 pages of nonsense instructions.

IGN: Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War
Warhammer 40,000 is a dark universe, and so it is nice to have an element of the game that provides levity and a sense of fun.
Ork warfare usually involves them "going to ground" until enough Orks mass in a single location that they simply overwhelm their enemy, or fall back, mass up, and try again.
Orks have the fastest vehicles in the game, and so are also suited to hit and run attacks early on.

GW Online : Warhammer 40,000 : Orks : Orks Homepage
The Orks are the most barbaric of alien races, their armies cover the battlefield in vast numbers and overrun their foes in a torrent of bloodshed and violence.
Of all the Ork warrior clans, Goffs are the most inspired by the thrill and thunder of battle, and are specialists in hand-to-hand combat.
Orks often make use of gun-festooned, fume-belching vehicles to ride into battle on, but some Orks take the love of vehicular slaughter further and form the Kults of Speed.

 Warhammer 40,000 3rd Edition
Unlike the previous editions of Warhammer 40,000, this new system has dispensed with the old movement value (M) entirely with the majority troops being able to move at the same rate (a couple of exceptions are Hormaguants and Horses) that being 6" per model.
Orks get 2 attacks in hand to hand combat making them very nasty to mess with, plus the Ork I armed with a Power Klaw which gives him a Strength of 8 in hand to hand combat (doubled the origanal strength) meaning he only needs a 3+ to hit and a 2+ to wound.
Orks have suffered drastically in the past as they were too weak or not good enough to do much damage against a Space Marine foe.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Preview
The Warhammer universe has a very distinct visual identity and after seeing the game in action, I was immediately drawn to the colorful and rich folklore, with each of the races having a very distinct visual appeal.
When you zoom in on the action you'll be able to see the Orks taking mighty swings with their war axes at the Mech-like units and bits and pieces of flesh and blood spraying all around as meat meets metal.
But in Warhammer 40k, a lot of the game happens in close combat, and often times the flow of the battle is decided by swords and axes.

Warhammer 40,000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Warhammer 40,000 (informally known as Warhammer 40K or 40K) is a science fantasy tabletop miniature wargame, produced by Games Workshop.
Warhammer 40,000 is the science fiction companion to Warhammer Fantasy.
The central and most popular elements of the Warhammer 40,000 universe are the Space Marines, anachronistic combinations of sci-fi super-soldiers and fantasy knights and the finest warriors of the Imperium of Mankind, a dystopian and degenerate galaxy-spanning empire.

Whether it is the drop pods of the Space Marines landing at your barracks-chapel, or an ork craft dropping a load of junk into a patch of ground for the creation of a building, these bring a certain life to your army.
The single player campaign for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War is entertaining, not too challenging, and is a great experience for getting you into the flow of the game for multiplayer.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade Unit Profile - Flash Gitz - PC News at GameSpot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
While most orks prefer to engage in hand-to-hand, melee combat, there are some who are obsessed with guns--the flash gitz carry some of the heaviest guns they can find into battle.
On the TT, Ork armies can actually deliver allot of punishing fire power. Each squad of shoota boyz can have allot of boyz in it, and then you have Flash Gitz and Lootaz in support (llotaz are a unit that orks can use that have taxed some other weapons off of some space marines or gaurdsmen).
Orks are never ever going to win in a straight firefight unless they have a ridiculous numbers advantage, so their shooty troops (in TT) just give effective fire support while still being able to stomp most things in close combat, which the video suggests they will do very well.

Orks are brutal, awkward and ramshackle in their appearance and gait, Chaos Marines and their demonic minions are dark, cruel and monstrous while regular Space Marines (enhanced humans) are very industrial and all business.
For the Orks (who are really fun to play) it is the Squiggoth, for the Imperials it is the Baneblade super tank, the Eldar and Chaos get their super warrior / demon while the Space Marines get the Rhino tank/ transported (personally prefer the Predator tank myself).

One of the most interesting elements of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise is the way that it often seems split between its fictional half and its tactical half.
Yet for all that, Warhammer 40,000 has a tremendously rich sci-fi/fantasy setting to draw on - with 20 years of history and storylines to draw on.
As a fan of both RTS games and richly drawn fictional universes, I've enjoyed playing the multiplayer portions of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, but when I got the opportunity to play two missions from the single player campaign, I jumped at the opportunity.

The Orks are heavily armed with crude, but highly effective weapons, vehicles and equipment and, as combatants unlucky enough to get up close to the Orks' front lines soon learn, these barbarians also excel at hand-to-hand combat.
Bigger and more powerful than the Ork boyz, the NOBZ are battle-hardened veterans filled with unquenchable bloodlust and consumed by the desire to decimate their enemies.
The stench of battle is irresistible to an Ork, and a skirmish will always draw increasing numbers of Orks, but it takes the arrival of the Warboss to give focus to the churning masses of Boyz and Nobz.

With this in mind I hope to bring together Warhammer 40,000 and the flexibility of the d20 system to allow for a gaming experience that no fan of the setting will ever forget.

About 15 years ago I stumbled into a Games Workshop (Bristol I think), and was amazed at the little models that were displayed all over the place.
In DoW, these come in 2 flavours – Requisition & Power (ok, the Orks have their own form of Requisition, Ork Resource) – Requisition is gathered via taking & holding Strategic points (or by building settlements & Waaagh banners if Ork) while power is obtained via power and thermo-plasma generators.
Ork Wartraks speed around doing untold damage to just about anything, Eldar Grav Platforms hum satisfyingly as they hover around dispensing long range death and Chaos Defilers look like giant scorpions but are so much deadlier.

The violent and brutish orks of the Warhammer 40,000 are so rough, so tough, and so eager to get into some kind of fight that they don't care about trifling things like personal safety, thoroughly testing their new weapon technology, or proper spelling.
Orks love a good fight with their fists and their axes, but they've had trouble against enemies with powerful ranged units that can pick them off from a distance.
I think it is a nice add to Orks so they fight fear battle with other races without suffering from long rang shooting enamy units.

RPGnet: Review of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
The main campaign is fairly simple; Orks are here, a Warp Storm is coming and the Space Marines must fight in order to allow a planetary evacuation.
For example, the Orks' technology was tied to population: losing a lot of Boyz meant losing access to certain pieces of technology.
The best example of this is the weapons available to Space Marine squads; heavy bolters to mow down lightly armoured troops (like Orks and some Eldar units), plasma guns to blast away heavy units (like the space/chaos marines), missile launchers to fill the anti-vehicle/building role and a flamer to break units' morale.
