Orkney, South Africa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orkney is a gold mining town situated in the Klerksdorp district of the North West Province, South Africa, near the N12 (national road from Johannesburg to Cape Town).
The town was named after Orkney Isles off the north coast of Scotland, the birthplace of Simon Fraser, one of the gold mining pioneers of the 1880s.
Orkney enjoyed fame in the late 1980's and early 1990's as the setting for a popular Afrikaans television sitcom called Orkney Snork Nie.

The cemetary was situated halfway along the road between Orkney and Klerksdorp, with the airfield directly across on the opposite side of the road.
The main reason for that was the dust in the air, causing the sharply angled rays to summon forth fantastic and almost surreal colors in the sky.

Ask any surfer about the curls at Jeffreys Bay - J-Bay to anyone who ever waxed a board - and watch their eyes frost over with delight at the thought of that swell, those tubes and the most consistent wave formations in South Africa, a place that knows about surf.
J-Bay is in Eastern Cape, an area with some of South Africa's wildest coastline, which is backed by some of Africa's most spectacular sub-tropical rainforest.
Surfers go as part of a pilgrimage, to pay homage to the legend and to ride beaches with names as diverse as Boneyards, Kitchen Windows, Magnatubes, Phantoms and the Albatross, and there are places that can provide you with a ride as long as three minutes if you catch them when the swell's right.
