 Nicole Skeltys's story...
I was enthralled by Orlando, and I think he really helped form my sense that life should be an adventure, that the mind should never be held back from wandering and exploring.
Orlando was a very handsome ginger tom, who went on adventures to far off lands.
My earliest feelings of wonderment, beauty and mystery come from the books I used to read in my local municipal libraries when I was a little kid, growing up in Brisbane in the 1970s.

Brandler Galleries - Specialists in Children's Book illustrations and British Fine Art - Orlando the Marmalade Cat
She wrote nineteen Orlando the Marmalade Cat books and was awarded the OBE in 1976.
This led to the wonderful muted colours of the books, by the time the books were a great success and read around the world she had mastered the technique and she could not change the look of Orlando the Marmalade Cat.
Because of her production techniques, although numerous other “full” paintings exist there are no paintings of her work for the Orlando the Marmalade Cat books as each painting was only for reproducing one colour.

 FAB Books for cat lovers
In fact, this condition has only been reported once in cats, in a closed inbred research colony, and since none of the cats was allowed to continue breeding the mutation was removed.
It has the same approach as her talks - a fascination for feline behaviours, from the normal to the bizarre, and a sympathy for all the owners of her cases, whether they too are normal or bizarre.
Reading her new book, Cat Confidential (what a great title!) is like being able to take Vicky home after a conference and listen to her for a few hours more.

They were all about Orlando the Marmalade Cat and his many adventures with his wife, Grace a tabby cat and their three kittens, Blanche, Pansy and Tinkle.
I have given details of the books on the "Orlando Books" page as they are so beautifully illustrated and make wonderful presents for all those cat lovers out there, particularly the British Shorthair lovers amongst you.
The Orlando books have the most beautiful illustrations using rich colours and they are also incredibly accurate observations of feline behaviour.

 Poodle Lit. 101/3
Orlando, a beautiful marmalade cat with eyes like "twin green gooseberries" and his wife Grace decide it would be good for their kittens to be allowed to keep a pet.
Kathleen Hale based almost all her characters on real animals and the well-meaning but boisterous Bill was a Poodle who was part of her household in the 1940's, along with the real-life Orlando, the marmalade cat.
The story of a lost canary, featuring a fluffy cat and a Poodle, all told in silhouette with use of half and whole pages to enable changes to be made to the illustrations.

Orlando (the Marmalade Cat): A Seaside Holiday: Seaside Holiday (Warne Orlando Books) ; Hardcover ~ Kathleen Hale
'Orlando the Marmelade Cat - A Camping Holiday' remains one of the most visually rewarding of the Orlando books with amazingly innovative illustrations and fantastic attention to detail.
But it remains a personal favourite of mine - partly because of a love of the subject matter (wildlife, tents, orange cats) but mostly because of the sumptuous pictures which have an innocent timeless quality about them which moves toddlers as well as adults.

Another old friend quite as attractive, in fact perhaps more admired by many readers - it is all a matter of taste - Orlando the Marmalade Cat, makes his new appearance in A Seaside Holiday.
Orlando is just as furry and just a clever as ever, his wife Grace, as charming as ever - how nice she looks in her new bathing dress with an anchor embroidered on the tail!
Then we have Lawrence Meynell's Smoky Joe, in which a cat, a brisk and buoyant creature full of such strange oaths as 'milk and moleskins', tells how his naughtiness earned him a sentence of banishment and how at the last moment his courage and cleverness averted it.

Books Bohemian culture 'is now the norm'
Others - including Arthur Ransome, who later became Guardian Moscow correspondent and wrote the Swallows and Amazons books, and Kathleen Hale, creator of the Orlando the Marmalade Cat children's books - were so poor in the pursuit of their art that they went without food.
Some of their lives ended in suicide, fatal illness, alcoholism, drug addiction or the despair of late middle age, fates that befell artists including Woolf herself, Katherine Mansfield, who caught gonorrhoea and died of tuberculosis, the poets Roy Campbell and Dylan Thomas, and the painter Augustus John.
Mrs Nicholson said: "We have to recognise that many of our present assumptions about life have originated from people who, sometimes in very small ways but motivated by revolutionary ideals, hope and defiance of convention, challenged the establishment 100 years ago.

I think that had more than the ordinary amount of spirits in it." Then she sat on the rock next to Emma, put an arm around her shoulder, and tried to think of a way to make her feel better.
After getting swept away in an ocean of Alice's tears and running a caucas race with a lot of weird talking animals to dry off, Emma bandied words with a crazed Duchess and her violent cook, a pipe-smoking caterpillar, and an invisible Cheshire cat.

The cat sniffed the book, looking distrustful, but then he licked my hand, which I interpreted as consent.
I caressed my cat's head lovingly and he mewed – rather doubtful, but not altogether refusing to listen.
When I came back around the corner of the little house, I found my human standing in the doorway, still dressed in the rumbled clothes of the previous day - with a generous amount of cat hair on his pants.
