Orley Farm (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orley Farm is a novel by Anthony Trollope, first published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in 1861.
The novel deals with a court case emanating from problems relating to the will of Sir Joseph Mason, in which the question is asked whether Mason's widow forged her husband's signature bequeathing the title of Orley Farm to her son, Lucius.
Subtly, the reader is brought round to the perspective that Lady Mason may after all have committed the forgery.

 Orley Farm School
Orley Farm School was founded in September 1850 by Mr Edward Ridley Hastings, known to generations of boys as "Teddy".
During the 1950s, Orley Farm continued to expand and more space was required, so a house across South Hill Avenue, "Oakmead", was added to the facilities.
The Orley Farm School of 2005 is a very different place from the small room where it began in 1850, but without the vision of Edward Ridley Hastings, the patronage of Samuel Gardner and the dedicated support of generations of staff, parents and pupils none of it would exist today.

When Lucius discovers what his mother has done, even though she is acquitted at the trial that follows, he gives up the property to his older brother, who was the original heir.
Orley Farm itself is modeled after Trollope's boyhood home in Harrow.
This novel is notable not only for its subtle characterizations and its humor, but for Trollope's deft handling of the complex legal wranglings that are central to the story.

Yet he thought that the plot for Orley Farm 'was probably the best I had ever made' -- a judgement with which his public agreed.
A display of unwise high-handedness by her spoiled son Lucius angers a tenant of the Orley Farm estate unnecessarily, and triggers off a fresh investigation.
Gradually, the reader is brought to suspect that Lady Mason might, after all, have been guilty: that she might just possibly have forged the codicil which bequeathed Orley Farm to her son: and she may be in growing danger of being put on trial again not just for forgery but for perjury as well.

This is a successful depiction of young woman profoundly absorbed in the reading of a letter; her face is wholly in shadow yet alive with alertness; the room is detailed, poor yet respectable.
In Orley Farm, Millais represents such scenes through detailed darkened landscapes which use fl lines against a white groundwork so that the whole surface of the picture seems alive with feeling and a mellowed suggestiveness (see, for example, 'Lucius Mason, as he leaned on the Gate that was no longer his own', facing p.
Trollope's novels are crowded with scenes in which a figure is preoccupied with writing or reading a letter or book, gazing out to contemplate a landscape or more citified scene, or looking inward at some inner and often deeply-troubling series of memories.

This is a novel about the death of the heart: perhaps the closest Anthony Trollope ever came to genuine tragedy.
Trollope wrote that, with this particular novel, he had in mind 'the telling of some pathetic incident in life', and Sir Harry Hotspur is a tragedy told in miniature.
This interesting novel, written on board ship in the two months it took The Great Britain to travel from Liverpool to Sydney, is another shrewd study of the nature of the power of obsession.

It's a Victorian novel in which all the characters are dragons.
I complained that the fantasy novel didn't really understand dragons, and he misheard and thought that I meant that Trollope didn't.
I saw the dragons as a way of writing a Victorian novel that would say something about the Victorians from a perspective they didn't have, but which would also be a Victorian novel.
