The Ornithopter Zone - Fly Like A Bird - Flapping Wing Flight
In an ornithopter, the downstroke blade resistance provides lift, and we can feather the blade during the upstroke so resistance is minimized.
In the ornithopter, lift is produced by the flapping wings, often in conjunction with some additional fixed wings.
Adalbert Schmid's engine-powered manned ornithopters, flown in 1942 and 1947, were the most successful to date.

The da Vinci Code for Flight | LiveScience
Da Vinci's ornithopter, as it was called, was not built in his lifetime.
Ornithopters have been a bit of a technological dead-end.
For an ornithopter, as with a bird, the flapping motion has to generate both lift and thrust.

 Ornithopter
An ornithopter is a type of flying machine that attempts to fly by imitating the flapping of a bird's wings.
Some ornithopters were propelled with oars; others used the arms and legs of the occupants for power.
Edward Frost of Cambridgeshire, England, constructed an ornithopter of willow, silk, and feathers in 1902.

University of Toronto ornithopter takes off
The concept of an ornithopter differs from standard fixed-wing aircraft because when flying its wings flap up and down in a manner similar to that of birds in flight.
Equipped with a 24-horsepower engine and a model airplane turbo booster, the ornithopter flew for 14 seconds at an average speed of 88 km/h, in the process travelling a third of a kilometre.
In the meantime, the ornithopter is on display at the Toronto Aerospace Museum in Downsview Park.

  Project Ornithopter
An aircraft that derives all of its thrust and nearly all of its lift from flapping wings.
The notion of ornithopter flight became marginalized, although it continued to fascinate inventors and researchers as described in the History section.
One of the reasons for this is that successful full-scale piloted ornithopter flight is one of the last great aeronautical records.

  CBC News In Depth: Science
Flapping-wing aircraft, or ornithopters, are one of humanity's oldest aeronautical dreams.
For example, the ornithopter's wings are attached to a central section along the fuselage that is moved vertically by the drivetrain of a 24-horsepower König engine, a model often used in ultralight aircraft.
And although the ornithopter's wings appear similar to those of a normal aircraft, they are actually built much stronger because of the far greater stresses that must be withstood during flight.

 Light Flight: Ornithopter flight (?)
Ornithopters are flying machines that attain and maintain flight through flapping wings.
The ornithopters two major problems are its structural strength, and the power-to-weight ratio required.
The great advantage of an ornithopter will probably only be seen in light aircraft and UAVs as cruise power demand and noise emmissions are inherently lower than propeller driven systems and much more of an issue in these systems.

The ornithopter is one of many intriguing ideas created by Leonardo da Vinci.
Although these inventions were never carried through to completion, the drawings for them are skillful.

Jacob Degen and his 1809 Ornithopter
Movement of the wings was effected by a steam engine to which the steam was supplied through a long tube from a boiler on the ground.
In 1809, it was widely reported that the Austrian Jacob Degen had successfully flown in an ornithopter.
In fact, the reports and the illustrations that accompanied them neglected to mention that Degen and his contraption, an embellishment of Besnier's design, were tethered to a large hot-air balloon.

 It's a Bird, It's a Plane
Once in the air, a bird (and an ornithopter), must find a way to sustain lift and thrust, even when it is lifting up with its wings.
To accomplish this, birds (and ornithopters) must constantly change their wing angle to take advantage of the rush of air.
She has created her own model of an ornithopter based on the skeleton of an ancient pterosaur and is convinced it will fly.

Dragonfly by Wowwee: The World's First Radio-Controlled, Fluttering Insect: VIDEO - Popular Mechanics
The FlyTech Dragonfly is the world's first commercial, radio-controlled ornithopter; that's kind of a mouthful, but basically it flies by flapping instead of using propellers as a main thrust (see video, above).
The Dragonfly, winner of a Popular Mechanics Editor's Choice Award here at CES — though it's on display at the smaller, more innovative Sands expo — features four wings and a tail rudder, which help it fly at up to 18 mph just by flapping.
It looks pretty interesting, especially if it proves to be easily controlled, but it is not the "world's first commercial, radio-controlled ornithopter".
