Digimorph - Ornithorhynchus anatinus (duckbill platypus)
Ornithorhynchus anatinus, the duckbill platypus, is a unique mammal native to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, where it frequents freshwater streams, rivers, lakes, and lagoons.
Although the osteology of Ornithorhynchus is well described (Pritchard, 1881; Wilson and Hill, 1908; Watson, 1916; de Beer and Fell, 1936; Simpson, 1938; Zeller, 1989a, b; Musser and Archer, 1998), the literature is scattered and access to specimens is difficult.

Platypus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a small, half-aquatic mammal endemic to the eastern part of Australia, and one of the four extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young (the other three are echidnas).
It is the sole representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of fossilised relatives have been found, some of them also in the Ornithorhynchus genus.
The scientific name Ornithorhynchus is derived from ορνιθορυνχος (ornithorhynkhos), which literally means "bird nose" in Greek, and anatinus means "duck".

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a small, semi-aquatic mammal endemic to the eastern part of Australia, and one of the four monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.
The Platypus looks rather like a beaver: the body and broad, flat tail are covered with brown fur, but it has webbed feet and a large, rubbery snout that that led to it being known as the "Duckbilled Platypus" for a time.
The scientific name ornithorhynchus literally means "bird nose" in Greek, and anatinus refers to "duck".

© Dr. Ellen K. Rudolph - Platypus - Ornithorhynchus anatinus
The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus means 'birdlike snout') is streamlined like other mammals which live in water, such as otters and beavers, but it is much smaller than these animals.
It is roughly half the size of an average household cat.
Ornithorhynchus anatinus has been part of the Australian fauna for at least 50,000 years, occupying the rivers of the Australian mainland and Tasmania, in an area ranging from Cooktown in Queensland - along the eastern coast of Australia- down to Melbourne and King Island, and Hobart.

The common name is derived from the Greek words platus (flat) and pous (foot), meaning "flat foot" and was originally given to it as a Linnaean genus name, but it was discovered to already belong to the wood-boring ambrosia beetle (genus Platypus).
Platypus was also the name of a progressive metal supergroup side-project featuring John Myung (of Dream Theater), Derek Sherinian (former Dream Theater member), Ty Tabor (of King's X), and Rod Morgenstein.
