Platypus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a 30–40 cm long, semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, and one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young (the other four are echidnas).
It is the sole extant representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of fossilised relatives have been found, some of them also in the Ornithorhynchus genus.
The scientific name Ornithorhynchus is derived from ορνιθόρυγχος ("ornithorhynkhos"), which literally means "bird snout" in Greek, and anatinus means "duck-like".

The Short-billed Echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus (spiny short-tongue) is one of three species of the strange mammalian Order Monotremata (meaning "one-holed" and referring to the presence of a cloaca with a combined eliminatory and genital functions).
The other two species are the Platypus (Ornithorhyncus anatinus....bird-billed like a duck), found in Eastern Australian freshwater ways, and the Long-billed Echidna found only in the rainforests of New Guinea.
The evolutionary history of monotremes is ancient, with recent molecular phylogeny suggesting that monotremes and marsupials diverged from the line leading to placentals (eutherian mammals) more than 100 million years ago.

Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a mammal, but signs could lead us to believe that this classification is wrong: amphibian, oviparous, duck-billed, etc. We will try to verify this classification using molecular data.
Ornithorhyncus anatinus and the other mammals share the same common ancestor which no other taxon shares as well.
In contrast, the grouping of Monotremata with placental mammals, to the exclusion of marsupials is supported by a non significant bootstrap value (50% with parsimony, 58% with NJ), showing that this grouping is not supported by the data.

An animal that had the fur of a mammal and fed its young on milk, yet brought those young forth from eggs, was too much for the average sensible citizen.
It was at first dubbed Ornithorhyncus paradoxus, "bird-nosed puzzle", but now is properly called Ornithorhyncus anatinus, the latter part of the name apparently meaning "duck".
It's often referred to as the "duck-billed platypus," which makes one tend to wonder just how many non-duckbilled kinds of platypus might exist!
