Oropher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, Oropher was a Sindarin lord of Elves.
Oropher was one of the Sindar of Doriath, but after the War of Wrath he declined to depart Middle-earth as many others did, and instead went over the Ered Luin with his house-hold.
Oropher answered the summons for the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, and joined with Gil-galad's forces as they marched down Anduin to Dagorlad.

Oropher was not so lost in his thoughts that he did not hear the siren song, and he pushed his anger aside as he followed the music to its source, a smile lighting his face as he recognized the musician, not by her face which he could not yet see, but simply by her playing.
Oropher was so entranced with these rustic people that he had taken the time to learn their language that, as far as he was concerned, possessed a simple yet elegant beauty.
Oropher sensed that she was one who was possessed of great wisdom and compassion to whom he could speak freely, and he decided to take her into his confidence, for he sorely needed someone to talk to at this moment.

Oropher's company was lightly armed, as he refused to deal with Dwarves and had no good armories of his own.
In the battle of Dagorlad Oropher's company fought valiantly, but he was slain with the greater part of his people when they got caught off the main Elven host.

In UT, Tolkien stated several reasons for this move: one was to be free of the dwarves of Moria, another was that Oropher, “resented the intrusions of Celeborn and Galadriel,” and didn’t wish to be merged with other Elves of Sindar origin who were dominated by the Noldorin exiles.
And a final reason was that Oropher was disturbed by rumors of Sauron and moved to avoid the growing evil.
Apparently though, Oropher’s move away from Lorien was not an unfriendly one for there was frequent communication between Lorien and Oropher up until the War of the Last Alliance.

The burrow thwarted Oropher's eyes even more than it did his ears for, though elven eyes could see nearly as far by starlight as they did in the noonday, there was no light at all beneath the earth.
Oropher tried very hard to learn...but sometimes, seeing that the forest seemed to shelter the wretched Orcs and the fell beasts of Morgoth as well, it was easy to think that the woods cared not at all for Elves and that they were without allies beneath its boughs.
Oropher spoke quickly, for other members of their band were staring at the new-comers and starting to crowd in, and he feared that the children would be further frightened if fussed over now.

It is sad to know that Oropher will lose two thirds of his warriors, and himself, and Amdir half of *his*, and his own life, precisely *because* they are not as well armed as the Noldor *and* becuse both kings and their people are not willing to bow to Gil-Galad.
Tolkien is very clear that Oropher's reason for merging with the Silvan elves was a basic respect for their way of life, and a belief that it was the way of life natural to all elves.
So if Oropher hadn't moved North then Thranduil couldn't have fought his own battles with darkness and Legolas wouldn't have been able to be were he was needed when the fellowship was formed.

This he did to be free from the power and encroachments of the Dwarves of Moria, which had grown to be the greatest of the mansions of the Dwarves recorded in history; and also he resented the intrusions of Celeborn and Galadriel into Lórien.

It may be that Oropher and Amdir advanced down the eastern shore of Anduin, while Gil-galad, Elendil, and Durin passed west of Lorinand toward Parth Celebrant.
Oropher could have preceded or followed them on their road south, and Amdir and Durin would have crossed Anduin via boats (much as Celeborn several thousand years later when he assaulted Dol Guldur).
Therefore we may suppose that Oropher took the right side of the field with Amdir holding the outer flank.

The explanation for this is found in the History of Galadriel and Celeborn (in Unfinished Tales), where there's a brief account of the arrival of Thranduil's father Oropher among the Silvan Elves of Greenwood the Great.
It's made obvious there that Oropher and his small band of Sindar merged themselves completely with the Silvan people of the Wood, leaving behind their Sindarin inheritance.
Oropher was the ruler of the Elves who dwelt in the Greenwood, and he began to seek safety by moving his people northwards, away from Amon Lanc and away from the Silvan Elves who lived to the west of the Great River.

It's fascinating to see Oropher being drawn to the Silvan way of life, as Tolkien told us he was.
This story was such a great way of showing a little of the reasons behind what Oropher will do later and you create an amazing picture of his closeness to all of nature as well as his love of the Silvan elves and their way of life.
Oropher must have been close to nature, a Silvan Elf at heart, to even contemplate the move he finally made.

The outcome was that he was cut off from the main host, including his son, and driven into the Marshes (later called Dead Marshes) were he and most of his army was slain.
